Poolman's Account Talk

Eeeewh! My pool filter's leaking. Arrrrghhh!

If you were closer I would be offering you a job as an independent contractor right now.

Just a thought: I've never had a regular "pool guy" or service. Where might I find an un/under employed person in the local area with the necessary KSA to fix it? I think I have the K but the S and A part diminishes as I get older. Something about connecting heavy objects to multiple PVC pipes before the glue dries or gets dirty.

Hope I am not over stepping any boundries here. Thanks for all the vids you post.

regards

Everything is good and your welcome for the Videos. Thank you too.

If you would like some free advice post a pic of the leak or explain as best you can. Could be a number of things. A picture is worth a thousand Words... Pic would be nice. I'm familiar with most All equipment.

Thanks Poolman. I am not asking about local guys who may need the money because I am cheap (though I am) but would like to find a local guy who could use the work. More in a few minutes.

Here is the whole filter/pump/valve system minus the pop up valve.View attachment 8361

It is/was leaking from the top rubber gasket where the back flush valve attaches to the tank. View attachment 8362

Since the pump picked up prime I have let it run, ocasionally bleeding air from the valve by the gauge, and listened to it belch every so often. The leakage has slowed down and it is operating pretty normally now. So everything is OK, right?:D

Just trying to make a little joke about my home maintenance methods.:suspicious:

Hope this isn't cluttering up your thread too much.

The pool is 10 years old and the filter sand has never been replaced or replenished because I got sick of the conflicting advice from "professionals" and coworkers. The back flush valve was replaced a couple years ago in spite of trying to lubricate it every so often. Not often enough I guess.

That Backwash Valve you speak about is also called a push/pull valve. It does need to be lubricated at least once a year. I take it that it is leaking around the top of it.

You need to shut the system down and take that little bolt out that goes in from the side. Then you can pull that push/pull valve completely out of it's assembly. There are going to be two big o'rings that will be visible on the push/pull valve. There are going to be also two small o'rings if you further disassemble the actual push/pull valve. If you do there will be a c - clip that you will have to deal with on the valve. These O'rings all need lubrication as least once a year. I would use Aqua Lube for the lube. The smaller o'rings are not usually the culprit.

Inspect the O'rings for any dry rotting or little chips taken off of them or possibly does not hold a good shape on the push/pull assembly. You can replace all the o'rings if need be. If you do lube them while reassembling with new o'rings. If your o'ring's are in good shape just smear a bunch of Lube on them really good and reassemble.

Also you can replace the whole push/pull valve as an assembly complete with new o'ring's. Cost more and not neseccary unless when you trying to pull the push/pull valve out the way I said to you break the handle. It happen's.

It sounds like your o'rings are getting worse with time. Now to the point of leaking and

having a hard time getting the pump to prime.

Attention is needed.

Also by trying to get your system running again over and over you can burn up the pump seal in the pump which could also be a problem. You should be able to pull a prime within 30 to 60 seconds even if the pump was off overnight.

A Good Poolman is Gold if you own a pool and you don't know everything. Honestly in my area $100.00/Hour or your not a Gold Card Member and will not be treated as one.

As far as that sand filter. Don't change the sand ever. Instead get rid of it when your ready and get a DE filter. :)

Guess I wasn't explicit enough. It is leaking where the push/pull valve attaches to the filter tank.

It's leaking at the arrow.

Those big Gnarly looking things are called bulk head fittings. If they are leaking you need to shut the system off. Drain the filter tank of water by taking the filter drain Cap off at the bottom of the tank and opening up the bleeder screw where the filter Gage is. Let it drain for a couple of hours then loosen the bulk head fittings. There are two of them. You need to wiggle the filter away from them in a careful manner as not to break any of the pvc pipes. The filter is Heavy. Once you wiggle the filter away from the bulkhead fittings two o'ring's will be visible. Check them for any anomaly and if nothing is visibly wrong with the o'rings lube them and reassemble. Do not tighten the bulk head fitting with a pair of channel locks, these fitting should only be hand tight at most. They will crack especially with age, be careful.

If the o'rings are not in good shape replace them and lube and then reassemble.

I hope this helps.

:)

Thanks, Poolman. You confirmed what I needed to know. Key words are heavy and PVC pipes. And drain as pool water must go down sanitary sewer but filter water may or may not be OK to drain in the yard but EPA must be consulted for the current days ruling, phase of the moon and need for income.

I'll hire someone. Maybe the guy who replaced the slider valve. It is his bulkhead connectors that are leaking.

The pump picks up within about 15 seconds, just not right as usually there is water in the pump basket well. It is draining that much overnight apparently.

Not to worry, I am ignorant but not that ignorant.

Thanks for you help.

Thanks for the videos Poolman! getting rid of any of that snow yet?

Thanks CrabClaw,

We still have ton's of snow. We really have not had any temperatures get above High 30's during the day. Most of the roads are clear but not all. My daughter will go to school tomorrow for the first time in 12 day's. And her school is delayed 2 hours.

Washington DC Federal Goverment was delayed 2 hours this morning and appears to be back to normal tomorrow.

I like snow and can easily deal with 8 or 10 inches but after that it is a pain in the butt. I will take a couple of pictures tomorrow of some different locations because I will be taking my daughter to school and post them. Thanks for asking. :)

Well I'm sure the warm weather will come to that part of the country soon enough. It is odd though that the east coast has more snow than where I live in the Colorado Rockies in mid February. :p

I know. It was a record year for snow. I've never seen this much ever. We usually only get snow 2 -5 times a year and it is small amounts.

The Dollar is very strong today and the market is still positive. This is not how the markets usually work. If the Dollar keeps getting stronger throughout the day the markets IMO are going to get dragged down.

The Dollar being strong is not good for the I - Fund.

I've got some more snow Pictures around the area that I took this morning. I will post some in a bit.

I took these Pictures this morning after I dropped my Daughter off at her school. Her school is delayed through this Friday 2 hours late. I will make a few posts since we are limited to 4 pictures per post.

Oh, While it is on my mind, I will not be around tomorrow during trading hours. I will be bringing my laptop with me. If I make a change I may not announce it here. Look to the Tracker.
