Oil Slick Stuff

Yucca Mountain - proposed site for nuclear waste. Waiting for 30 years. There's a tax on nuclear utlities right now that is supposed to be paying for maintaining the site. No approval so far, no plan B. Until this gets settled, or an alternative site or method of storing nuclear waste is found, there's no way nuclear power can be an option.

HONOLULU, Hawaii (CNN) -- Bobby Maxwell kept a close eye on the oil industry for more than 20 years as a government auditor. But he said the federal agency he worked for is now a "cult of corruption" -- a claim backed up by a recent government report.

Bobby Maxwell, a long-time auditor of the oil industry, says his former agency is corrupt "top to bottom."

"I believe the management we were under was showing favoritism to the oil industry," Maxwell told CNN.
Maxwell is referring to a tiny agency within the Department of the Interior called the Minerals Management Service, which manages the nation's natural gas, oil and other mineral resources on federal lands.
A report, conducted by the Interior Department's inspector general and released earlier this month, found that employees at the agency received improper gifts from energy industry officials and engaged with them in illegal drug use and inappropriate sexual relations. It looked at activities at the agency from 2003 through 2006.
Maxwell said the report doesn't surprise him. The agency, he said, is corrupt "top to bottom."
"It sounds like they forgot they work for the government," he said. "It's disgusting. ... There's no excuse for that. Those people should not be working in those positions at all. [more] http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/10/14/oil.whistleblower/index.html

Oil back near 13-month low

Crude falls below $78 a barrel on concerns that the bank bailout won't shore up the economy or demand.

The U.S. Department of Energy is expected to report on Thursday that oil stock is on the rise.

SINGAPORE (AP) -- Oil prices fell below $78 a barrel Wednesday in Asia on concern a massive bank bailout by the U.S. and Europe won't keep the global economy from slipping into a severe slowdown that would erode crude demand.
Light, sweet crude for November delivery was down 98 cents to $77.65 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange by midafternoon in Singapore. The contract fell overnight $2.56 to settle at $78.63.
Oil prices have fallen by 47% since peaking near $150 a barrel in mid-July. "People are worried that the world economy is heading for recession," said Gerard Rigby, an energy analyst at Fuel First Consulting in Sydney. "The bailout may save the banks, but companies are still laying off workers and demand is going to suffer."
The U.S. plans to spend as much as $250 billion of a $700 billion bailout buying stock in private banks, President George W. Bush said Tuesday. Governments across the globe have pledged more than $3 trillion to prop up ailing banks in a bid to stabilize a credit crisis that began last year in the U.S. sub-prime mortgage market.
Former U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker said Tuesday the U.S. and Europe face a "considerable recession." "The banks might be ok, but the rest of the economy needs help as well," Rigby said.
Investors are watching for signs of slowing U.S. demand in the weekly oil inventories report to be released Thursday from the U.S. Energy Department's Energy Information Administration. The petroleum supply report was expected to show that oil stocks rose 3.1 million barrels last week, according to the average of analysts' estimates in a survey by energy information provider Platts.
The Platts survey also showed that analysts projected gasoline inventories rose 3.1 million barrels and distillates went down 850,000 barrels last week. Crude stocks have grown as oil installations in the Gulf of Mexico that were shut down by Hurricane Ike last month begin operations again.
"There is some demand destruction in that forecast, but there's also hang over from the hurricane as refineries come back on line," Rigby said.
In other Nymex trading, heating oil futures rose 2.26 cents to $2.2823 a gallon, while gasoline prices fell 0.34 cent to $1.8814 a gallon. Natural gas for November delivery rose 0.05 cent to $6.732 per 1,000 cubic feet. In London, November Brent crude was down 84 cents to $73.69 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

Hey Nnuutt,
Price per barrel, as you point out is now almost 1/2 what is was a few months ago.

- any idea why price at the pump, for gasoline, other fuels, is lagging so much (basically refined prices are still 85-90% of prices paid at the peak)?

I'm not Nnutt,

But I read this a few months ago, why the gas at the pumps lags so much. It's my understanding that the profit margin is so razor thin for these station owners, that they recoup their profit, buy slowly lowering the price quicker than they raise it. This razor hin profit margin is one reason big oil is getting out of the service station business. Others can correct me if I'm wrong. :D

AND, there is the Trickle Down Effect, it takes time. The numbers that we see today for Oil and Gas are for FUTURES CONTRACTS, todays numbers are for Nov. 8th. There is a considerable time lag between the time it takes to begin refining the oil into gas and when it reaches the pump. This will not effect Gas prices until all of the inventories are sold that were processed at the current price, and greed of course.:worried:

nnut,

Isn't it amazing how the fuel prices rise with the increase in oil price almost immediately and then only slooooowly decrease as oil drops.
Then if oil rises again, the slow decrease of fuel cost changes course and jumps back up.:suspicious:

Bullseye, CB. A family member owns a small C-Store. He says that he makes nothing on gas - actual profit on his fuel is less than a full cent per gallon. He stays in business by selling the milk and the Twinkies to folks who buy one or two grocery items after pumping their gas.

That's why a lot of gas stations only want cash now, credit card companies refuse to re-negotiate current terms that currently leave no money for the stations (or when prices were going nuts, some lost money). Also, many gas stations are told by their suppliers what price they are going to sell at.

Let's see, Buster?

They were there to talk about immigration reform. I'm amazed that they actually "invited" John McCain. I think they just wanted a Kennedy. Remember, this was a BIPARTISAN effort to reform the immigration issue.

Just because one of the partners was ACORN, doesn't mean McCain was BUYING anything.

And since were calling out illegal activities, when are we going to send BIDEN to court to figure out what he, his son, and his brother were doing with all the embezzled funds from their dastardly deeds?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/08/23/AR2008082302200.html

Please don't grasp at straws....Straw houses blow down all by themselves.

This is my one and only political post this week......

I'm Frixxxx, and I approve this message.
