Oil Slick Stuff

Giant, oil-belching sinkhole dooms more than 100 homes in Louisiana

By John Upton

It’s looking like a neighborhood in Assumption Parish, La., has been permanently wiped out by a sloppy salt-mining company.

A sinkhole in the area has grown to 15 acres since an old salt mine that was emptied to supply the local petrochemical industry with brine began collapsing in August. Hundreds of neighbors were long ago evacuated, and many of them are now accepting that they will never return to their homes.

The sinkhole isn’t just endangering homes, it is also burping out oil, natural gas, and debris, shaking the area so powerfully that seismic equipment is being used to monitor the site. And brine from the sinkhole is in danger of contaminating local waterways. This thing is so big it even has its own Facebook page.

The company that owns the underground brine cave sold the liquid to oil companies looking to frack. So much has been pumped out, that now more than 100 homes have fallen in and been destroyed.

That's not a lake- that's the sinkhole...

no offense to those who choose to live there, but every house in louisiana is doomed.

geographically challenged is the proper term i think. it's the septic drain for nearly everthing west from the point in pittsburg at the ohio river south from the canadian border to the crystal clear head waters of the missouri river that flow east from the continental divide. it all passes through the delta which like most of lousiana is at or near sea level, so it don't take much of a rain to make the turds float. heck, they have to bury dead people 6 feet above ground down there.

good thing the wheels most of the houses came in on are still out back behind the shed so it don't take long to kick out the stack of cinder blocks foundation and make heel dust. don't get me wrong, i loved the whole drive-through margaurita slushy stand dump the crawfish boil pot on the picnic table covered with yesterdays newspaper eat like animals culture part. which is why to this day i keep a couple of gatorade/cuervo mixed bottles in the freezer should the urge strike to head to the nearest red lobster.

plus it's hotter than hell down there. i hear tell they pray for fire just to cool things off a bit.

In the Gulf the water is brackish and could use more salt to add flavor th the Oysters and other seafood farmed there. Oysters from the Atlantic have much more flavor, Gulf oysters are bland.:D

Glad I filled up the cars today..E10 @ $3.12 (which I wouldn't put in a lawnmower let alone my cars).. and 100% @ $3.17

Please don't do that, it would put me under James and that's not a good position.
Now that's a image I'm hoping to forget very soon...

And this is good for our economy how?
Sounds stupid to me, possibly less supply and more demand because of more jobs this month, Jobs numbers especially the unemployment numbers are rigged, problems in Egypt are not going to cut supply, so believe what you may oil is up because of politics not supply and demand.

I did not hear about this one till tonight...

Gas pipeline breaks, spills 25K gallons on Crow reservation in Mont.

Source: UPI

CROW AGENCY, Mont. -- A Phillips 66 pipeline that broke twice in 1997 spilled 25,000 gallons of gasoline on the Crow Reservation in southeastern Montana this week, officials said.

The leak from the 8-inch underground pipeline was detected Wednesday when workers from Phillips 66 Co., based in Houston, found the pressure on the line had dropped, NBC News reported.

A U.S. Department of Transportation spokesman said the leak, which occurred about 15 miles from Lodge Grass, Mont., was under investigation but posed no safety threat to the public and did not immediately affect any waterways.

The Crow Tribe and U.S. Environmental Protection Administration officials also were investigating.

The same pipeline broke twice in one week in 1997, spilling an estimated 2,300 barrels of gasoline near Lodge Grass and Banner, NBC News said.

Some may think that it is safer to transport Crude by pipelines under the ground instead of Truck and Train.
[h=1]Several people reported missing after train carrying crude oil derails in Quebec sparking explosions[/h]Published July 06, 2013Associated Press

A large swath of a town in eastern Quebec was destroyed Saturday after a train carrying crude oil derailed, sparking several explosions and forcing the evacuation of up to 1,000 people.
Several people were reported missing but Quebec provincial police Lt. Michel Brunet said it was too early to say if there are any casualties in the town of Lac-Megantic (Lack-MAH-Gan-Tic), about 155 miles east of Montreal.
The explosions ignited a blaze that sent flames shooting into the sky, and billowing smoke could be seen from several miles (kilometers) away hours after the derailment. Some of the train's 73 cars exploded and the fire spread to a number of homes in the town of 6,000 people.
