Nikkei

The Nikkei is down nearly 3% tonight, with about 30 minutes left in the trading day.

An educated guess? - I'd say that Nikkei knew something some 20-odd hours ahead - now just how did Nikkei know that? (And how could we know - other than to watch Nikkei)??

possibly, but I think it was more along these lines...
dollar driven.

HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Asian markets ended mostly lower Friday, with Japanese shares tumbling as a strong yen
dragged on exporters before a long weekend, while strong results from Tata Consultancy Services supported Indian stocks.
Most regional markets started the day on a weak note amid concerns about the U.S. economy and after the U.S. Senate
approved a sweeping financial-overhaul legislation. Read full story on the Senate approval for bank-reform bill.
"Investor sentiment is mainly hit by worries about a recovery in the U.S. economy," said Hidenori Suezawa,
chief strategist at Nikko Cordial Securities in Japan.
Japan's Nikkei Stock Average tumbled 2.9% for its biggest percentage fall since June 7.
Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gave up 0.5%, South Korea's Kospi lost 0.7% and Taiwan's Taiex shed 0.5%. China's Shanghai Composite and Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index ended flat.
Exporters were hit hard in Tokyo, where a public holiday Monday also prompted profit-taking action.
"We would be a bit concerned that traders are cycling out of the U.S. dollar and parking a lot of it in the yen,
thus triggering a gigantic inverted carry trade. If the USD/JPY cracks below 86.875, then we'd get quite a bit worried
as it probably signals that major institutions are convinced the U.S. has swallowed the deflation pill," said Richard Hastings, macro and consumer strategist at Global Hunter Securities.

Ouch! The EFA is down about 2% this morning. Unfortunately I'm already in the I-fund but I think I'll buy some EFA here near 58.00.

Nikkei now showing down -10.55% -10.55% !!

and Hang Seng now down -3.26% too.

That's some SERIOUS STUFF THERE.

Asian Contagion setting in?

It's a Merry Day-After-Christmas in Japan this morning (Boxing Day)- Nikkei is UP +1.13% in early trading.

True, but the TSE was closed for the Emperor's birthday on 12/23, so today was just a catch-up day. The question is which direction it will head tomorrow, prior to the open of our market. My instincts say flat - just waiting to see what we do.
