JTH's Account Talk

JTH,

Not to weigh in with distressing facts - but if you've had excessive heart burn for any prolonged period an endoscopy might be needed to check for pre-barrets disease which is a precancerous condition of the esophagus. You may need protonix instead of prilosec. Sorry, I'm a retired combination RN-RRT.

Thus far this hasn't been a good month for my quest to dominate the Auto Tracker and rule the world. Along with some senior folks, there's a rash of new blood with no fear and I'm getting outperformed by excellent timing. Of the top 10 only 2 converse frequently on the forum, most of those remaining lurk in the shadows giving no clue as to their methods. This is somewhat frustrating for me as I've always thought of this forum as a place to share ideas and contribute to each others success. If you don't post in the forum then what do you contribute?

I thought one of the requirements for maintaining an active account was to periodically post in your own account-talk thread. But some of the top 10 don't even have an account-talk thread (I've checked, b/c I'd love to hear their strategies!). Your posts are always insightful. Thanks, and keep it up!

It is possible that some of those folks are paid subscribers and thus since they can't realy talk about their moves they might feel there is nothing left to say. (Contribute) JMTC

That is true! But some of us know more than anybody and do it on our own!:laugh::cool:

I would like to post more often, but i rarely take a break or lunch at work and come home mentally exhausted. I thank you for the significant contribution you make to the forum. My suggestion to you, after reading many of your comments, is to trust your instincts and don't rely too heavily on price points or indicators. I would stop using the g-fund and use the f instead. I normally only use the g as a third IFT. It would be interesting if you checked what your YTD would be using the f in place of your actual moves to the g. I would guess that you would be in second place on the AT with that adjustment alone. I was just hours late trying to convince you to stay in the s through the end of June and into July and that would have have put you near first place. Not sure if I could have convinced you? I'm posting this now because I can't sleep. Ironic...

I'd be surprised. The top ten or twenty are way outperforming the premium services. More likely they just don't have any intention of sharing info and just want to compete with people here. I'm glad there are some on here that are willing to share their ideas but it isn't a requirement. I post on my little at thread and other threads because I want to be a part of this community. Others, not so much community oriented I suppose.

There was a time when I self-medicated every night, but the reality is drinking makes your sleep apnea much worse and smoking compounds the problem. After substancally reducing my drinking, no longer smoking cigerettes, and taking prylosec for excessive heart burn, I'm better than before. My sleep isn't the greatest but it's better than it was 3 years ago.

your heartburn is caused by eating the wrong foods for your blood type www.dadamo.com and low stomach acid production. the heartburn is caused by the food rotting and lactic acid is formed which causes the burning from your stomach to all the way out. U think the drug companies will tell u this, which acid is causing the problem?
Digestive enyzmes at the beginning of the meal and Betaine HCL near the end on the meal, will get rid of the heart burn, unless u are eating foods that really, really disagree with u. Type A and AB blood types have the lowest stomach production, and for everybody the level goes down around 40 yrs of age.

That's one of the reasons why I check JTH's thread throughout the day. I have absolutely no clue to the market or timing on trying to move funds around. If I was knowledgeable I'd be more than happy to share it with others to help them make money.

also sleep problems can be attributed to eating too late, or too big of a dinner with too much fat content. Dinner should actually be the smallest meal of the day. Having the low stomach acid condition, body is trying to digest food while one is trying to sleep. Low magnesium levels cause sleep problems. If one eats anything that has high fructose corn syrup in it, that person will have low mag levels. HFCS is a poison to the body, the body gets rid of it by attaching magnesium to it. www.mgwater.com one of the best sites on the subject. most of the info is from the work of Dr. Mildred Seelig

Thanks Valkyrie, when it comes to eating I do everything wrong in almost every way you can imagine. Had a glass-bottled coke and some green olives at 3am. It's typical for me to get up 3-4 times throughout the night and grab a snack. Most of the hearburn comes from anything spicy and excessive amounts of coffee.

JTH, do you see yourself making a move back into the market before the end of the month? I'm hoping to find a good entry to burn my last IFT before August starts even if its to get in for a couple day gain and get back out. Something is better than nothing I suppose.

That is very interesting, Valkyrie, and I believe it. I'm 43 and I get heartburn from anything with yeast - breads and baked goods, and beer :( But, two things have turned it around for me - when I'm on a diet like Wt Watchers the smaller portions, less fat, and higher fiber seem to all but eliminate heartburn. Also, one of God's miracles beats all heartburn medicines I've tried, and that's the granny smith apple. It really is amazing how well 3-4 GS apples per week work on heartburn, and for a good price, too.

As far a market thoughts, I have a few but I would never expect anyone to listen to me with my performance. I will share that I'm quite weary of July 29, the date that 2nd qtr GDP and previous qtr revisions will be announced.

But it is like jth says, keep a journal. That is what the at threads are supposed to be about even though we go off topic.

Sorry for the late reply, this morning's opening confirmed my analysis last night that I wasn't going to IFT in today. I very much would like to make an entry this month, but for me making the right entry is going to take priorty over which month it's going to be. I've already missed the 18 Jul entry which almost triggered a buy on one of my systems. Now I wait to see how this last upswing plays out.

I am pretty sure I am one of the few top returners that posts strategy...in case I am not, let me cut/paste a posting from earlier this year and refine it a bit.

Re: BigJohn's Account Talk

Interesting discussions this morning on investment strategies: DCA'ing, technical analysis, jumping in and out...etc...

My strategery:

If I am in the market and the trend is up, I stay in until I get the sense that a pull back is imminent (an iffy strategy at best) or that I have made enough for the time being and want to lock in a gain (the "pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered" way of thinking).

If I am in the market and the trend is down, I stay in...no matter how ugly it gets until the share price is above what I bought in at, then I consider locking in and taking a breather.

If I am out of the market and it is going up, I look at the historical prices and see if the latest move up is within the range of 30 day highs...if so, I get in.

If I am out and the market is going down...I stink. In 2008 I stayed out for about the first 20% of the big decline, jumped in after Warren Buffet said we were through the worst of it...took it in the shorts like most of us. However, I stayed in and had one of the top returns in 2009. I guess my only strategy here is to watch the share price action...if I see a week of fairly stable numbers, it might make me think a bottom has been formed.

None of this is ground breaking, but it is simple enough for me and has been profitable. Share prices and trends...and sticky pants at times.

Refinement, call it the 1% strategy:

If you are in the market and the pre-trade deadline numbers are more than 1% above where you bought in (as measured by the share price), I get out and lock it in.

If I am out of the market and the pre-trade deadline numbers are down more than 1% than the previous day's close, I go all in.

My earlier post alluded to this play but wasn't specific enough.

Buyer beware: in my 5 plus years on TSP Talk I have seen some red hot investment strategies come and go, some dropping off the board entirely and some being so successful they became a premium service. My strategy works for me for several reasons, the most significant of which is that I have a long time until retirement and can wait out a big loss...like I did in 2008. I lost about 34% in 2008...and was the highest return in 2009 because I refused to lock in a loss and left it alone...all the while buying more shares.

One BIG mistake I made early on was to allow my competitive nature dictate moves...some of the biggest mistakes I have made were motivated out of a desire to earn a coffee mug. I had to remind myself that money someone else makes is not money out of my pocket.

Finally a piece of advice: if someone on the board is kicking butt and not posting strategy, send them a message asking them to do so. I didn't post for years because I had no confidence in what I was doing and didn't want to lead others of a cliff.

BigJohn

Thanks Big John. You are to be commended for your openness and simplicity of your explanation of your strategy. You do this board credit.
