jpcavin's Account Talk

Thank you Grasshopper. I leave you with a Chinese proverb

"If you want happiness for a lifetime; help someone else."

I'm sure your future happiness is guaranteed my friend.

Thank you for your friendship.

Compared to other people, I don't think my life is very exciting. However, I think this weekend tipped the scales on excitement.
My house caught on fire. I blame it on Justin Bieber. Yep, you read correctly, it's not a typo.

I put some oil on the stove and I went to put some laundry away while I waited for the pan to heat up. At the same time, my 3 year old asked me to find her some Justin Bieber videos on YouTube. We were scrolling through YouTube when we heard some noises in the house. It sounded like someone or something was rummaging through our house. Went to investigate and could see the flames in the kitchen from the adjacent family room. I sent my daughter outside to wait in the car. I went in the kitchen and noticed the pan in flames but it was up to the ceiling by then and I didn't have baking soda.....Couldn't really do anything but go outside and call the fire department. The firefighters were very professional and kind and they put out the fire with minimal damage to the property.

My daughter and I are fine. My daughter however, is a little shaken up though. She's afraid to walk into the kitchen. But I guess she doesn't need to go in there until it's fixed.

We're staying with friends tonight and will stay at a hotel near the house until we get electricity back. Not sure when that will be. Electrical needs to be rewired which requires a permit and then the city/county needs to inspect the work. Insurance adjustor is coming by on Monday.

I am thankful that we are safe and that I still have a house. It could have been much worse.

Another positive note...I don't have to cook for a while. :D

now that's hot.

Hey, hot pants!
I'm glad to hear you're doing well and the damage was minimal. Having someone else cook for you is even better.
I'm not sure if I'm more surprised at you having a 3 year old, or, that you let her listen to Justin Bieber. :D

I have a few stories to tell you about the fireman I was engaged to, and the fire I started in the kitchen...... I'll save those for our "Mai Tai Sistah" meeting. :D

OUCH!!! After all that you still find time to come here to tell us about it. You are good and connected. If that happened to me, you wouldn't hear from me for weeks.

My Beautiful wife did that twice. The first time she caught it quickly and put the top on the pan, I had to paint the ceiling [high] and the walls. The second time same thing but I had to put it out with an extinguisher [always have one in the kitchen and garage] Had to paint the ceiling ,walls replace the Stainless vent hood and refinish the cabinet over the stove, Lucky. We have $500 deductible so I fixed it myself cause State Farm had just paid for us a new roof, storm damage $10,000, gave them a break!:D

Cactus
I already cleaned up the mess. I have nothing left to do except sit and wait for the insurance adjuster and the electrician.

Nnuut, in retrospect it seems I could have done something. Put a lid on the pan or look for baking soda. But the flames were pretty much out of control when we noticed and I had a 3 year old scared to death and crying. I just panicked and ran outside.
Glad to hear I'm not alone in starting kitchen fires. :D
Seems lately I can't remember anything.

I was a teenager when my mom accidentally turned on the burner on the oil instead of the coffee for company. I opened the door to enter the kitchen and I guess it was the burst of fresh air that caused the oil to burst into flames. Being a dumb teenager I didn't know you were supposed to put a lid on it. We had an extinguisher so I used it. Unfortunately that blew the pot of oil right off the stove covering the walls with oil. Fortunately it also put out the fire. It could have made things far worse. The worst thing that happened is I almost gave my mom a heart attack. The smoke was so bad in there that I didn't come back out the door. I went out the window leaving mom thinking I had died in there.

Thank you Scout.
Cactus, that is one of the funniest stories I've heard lately.

Well, I had an extinguisher, I had baking soda and I had lids. Apparently nobody that came to mind at the moment required. I guess you could say I was dumb struck :D

Thank you grandma and everyone else for your well wishes. It truly means a lot.

Man alive, jp. glad for you it wasn't worse. getting child and self out of the house first then assessing what you could do or couldn't do, sounds like you had your priorities in order. Resiliency on parade right here in front of us. good job sistah.
