Jkenjohnson's Account Talk

Re: h20skier account talk

ah congrats on the recovery...wow 5-6 years to recover.
That's not unusual. I didn't get back up to my Nov 2007 high until Oct of last year. Then I took that 5% hit in Jan & Feb and am now still below my Nov 2007 high. :(

From Nov 07 thru Mar 09 I lost 123,000 riding the S fund down the gauntlet. Didnt know what I was doing - didn't know how to manage the account and stayed in the S fund.:( In Dec of 11, I had gained it all back. I had not completed one IFT during this entire duration. It was at this time I said damn - I need to start getting serious about this! :worried: A co-worker told me about TSP Talk and I became a member in Jan 12. In the past 2.5 years I have been a buy and holder for the most part but have IFt'd on multiple occasions saving me some significant losses. I have more then doubled my balance since and it has dramatically improved my outlook on retirement - age eligible in 2020.;)

Can't speak enough about the benifits I have reaped from TSP Talk and everyone's contributions to the site. It has become a mandated, daily visit for both the seriousness of investing and humor sides of folks.

Thanks Tom and everyone!!!!

Re: h20skier account talk

Warren Buffett is sitting on 55 billion dollars in cash. This is the largest cash holding in Berkshire Hathaway ever. Does he know something we don't?

Re: h20skier account talk

He owns several furniture companies so you'd think he'd find something more comfortable than cash to sit on.

Booooo!!! Sorry.

Re: h20skier account talk

In 1 year and 9 months I'll be in the KMA club. Don't know if I'll leave but it will be a nice place to get to.

Re: h20skier account talk

Speak n from experience if you can "get da hell out" do it. I said to myself before get n out, john how much do you really need to live happy? It's really not much when you really think about being happy, money does not give that to you, it can ease some burdens. And you can always hang in there for more money but I questioned WHY....

Re: h20skier account talk

I would like to get out now, but if I do, I give up health insurance. That one thing is a big reason to stay in until my MRA.

Re: h20skier account talk

This is playing out like a Greek tragedy. Part of me wants it to be over because it's causing so much disruption but another part of me is very concerned about it's effect when it is over. The Greek people are going to suffer economic hardship but I don't think this event will be isolated. There will be ripples in the markets and in our economy. Of course the Europeans could decide to negotiate ( say give us Athens and we'll print money). Interesting times.

As stated many places on the MB everyone’s case is different and everyone has their reasons for staying or going. Hang in there ww, you weigh and decide.

jkj, being part of the KMA club can give you a good feeling but didn’t really make much difference to me. I became a member about six years ago and last year my membership was upgraded by age. I subtly made sure my immediate chain of command was aware and when asked made my plans known to them. I observed a couple of members of that club who got very vocal given a “mandatory PCS” with option to retire. Both are retired. I suspect there may be litigation out there somewhere but bottom line is they both checked out their options and chose to retire.

All that being said, it is a good feeling to be a member.

Re: h20skier account talk

Hi WW. I retired 9 years ago. I can tell you that as I've aged (in body not mind), my excellent federal health insurance is one of the best benefits I received from my federal career. When your health begins to deteriorate, you will never regret having that level of health support. Hand in there and you'll get there before you know it.

Re: h20skier account talk

I have just about given up on timing the market. I will just try and buy any dips in the future. Wish I would have had one more IFT in August.
