Well, looks like a 7.0 scale earthquake tonight in Haiti. I would presume this is going to dominate the news cycle for the next few days.

Haiti, especially Port-au-Prince area, is very poor, and very densely populated, so I presume there will be a lot of damage. We'll be hearing more soon, I'm sure.

Sorry to hear about it. Fortunately, Haiti is close by and we can get assistance there. Not like the 2004 tsunami.

May God watch over and help those poor, poor people...I'm so saddened with a very heavy heart, that I find little interest in posting and interacting here or anywhere right now..I'm going downtown tomorrow where the relief center is being setup and seeing what if anything I can do to help ...:(

There were similar bizarre stories during the S. Asian tsunami, where animals, as some people witnessed, were suddenly "spooked" prior to the giant waves hitting the coast.

I've never believed in a 6th sense for animals, but these events seem to run counter to that. I'm sure someone will come up with a "scientific" explanation.

Anyway, the death toll keeps rising in Haiti. Some UN people were killed and about 4 US Embassy people were already evacuated. There could be as many as 40,000 Americans there, but no one is sure right now.

Donations to the Red Cross would be appreciated, I'm sure. Now, there are some military units heading down to do disaster assistance. :worried:

IF any of you ask me for $10 and I am broke, I could not give you $10.

I really feel bad for the people of Haiti, but why is our government helping with financial aid:worried:? Our government is BROKE, and in-debt up to our necks.

So - big businesses, private organizations, etc... please help the Haitians, But our government should say "Sorry HAITI, we are broke"

Personally I support whatever our GOV gives them..So far I seen $100m in aid given to Haiti..I don't know if it's all Dollars and Cents..or included in the costs to mobilize a disaster relief campaign and the logistics has to be off the charts crazy...So, my heart is with them folks and the people helping...INCLUDING us tax payers.

If our government is broke, truly broke, then we need to reprioritize a LOT of things in this world.

Story on the news tonite about credit cards charging about 2% charge for donations. Nice folks.:suspicious:
Bottom line don't borrow money to give to charity, give what is already yours if you can afford it.
The companies promised to refund the charge after they were called on it.

I don't think the churches in general are given enough credit for what they do. I recall a post some time ago asking `where are the churches, why aren't they helping the poor & down'n'out?'
The fact is, they are. Check out the originations of many of the Pantrys -
which usually include other types of things too; there are the
`help-yourself' places out there among the low/basic cost stores, also, like Salvation Army, Goodwill.
And the businesses & private organizations give - (on a daily basis also, not just in disasters.) - as when truckers donated their rigs and collected however much could be loaded up and sent to Rita, sent to Coffeyville, KS. Just remember, much of what private & church related givings come from YOU - if you don't give, the trailor is empty. And sometimes it is up to Just one person to jump in & say `I'll do this...' & the others come in. - like Buster, like Phil & James finding out about MercyCorp. Whatever your feelings about The Red Cross, the fact is, they are citizens like you and me working those sites, and their cash, plus their physical reserves have been about shot through -
When the tsunami hit SE Asia, my church (1,500 membership), with a group of others gave close to $1million; that is 100% of what was given. We are a part of WME; & have missions in Haiti; our collection, come Sunday, will go into that group for medical supplies.
And some of our people will go, even as they have been to the numerous other places, including SE Asia. And I have no doubt that churches, charities, & organizations & even `jail-house' prisoners all over the country are doing the same with Haiti. And sometimes it turns out the smaller the group the more profound the ratio is of giving....
We need to pray that the influx of workers carry with them their own needs, so that the donations to the inhabitants are not overwhelmed by taking care of the workers. There will be many out-of-work folks with the skills needed down there. We can pray they go in an organized manner.

So, Tom, thank you for putting the collection info you set up with MercyCorp on our Front Page!. Everyone will see it, especially if they don't read any posts other than the `financials.'

You're welcome. It looks like a few people have been contributing. Thank you!!

Re: Haiti Earthquake: I Set Up a Fundraiser

And God bless former President Bush for doing this too.

Support the Earthquake Recovery Efforts in Haiti

On January 12, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti just outside the capital city of Port-au-Prince. The devastation – in lives lost, property destroyed, and families displaced – is immense.
At the request of President Obama, we are partnering to help the Haitian people reclaim their country and rebuild their lives.
Our immediate priority is to save lives. The critical needs in Haiti are great, but they are also simple: food, water, shelter, and first-aid supplies. The best way concerned citizens can help is to donate funds that will go directly to supplying these material needs.
Through the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, we will work to provide immediate relief and long-term support to earthquake survivors. We will channel the collective goodwill around the globe to help the people of Haiti rebuild their cities, their neighborhoods, and their families.
We ask each of you to give what you can to help ensure the people of Haiti can build back stronger and better than ever.
Both of us have personally witnessed the tremendous generosity and goodwill of the American people and of our friends around the world to help in times of great need. There is no greater rallying cry for our common humanity than witnessing our neighbors in distress. And, like any good neighbor, we have an obligation and desire to come to their aid.
Thank you for taking the time to visit, and we hope you will donate to this worthwhile cause. The people of Haiti now need our assistance more than ever.
President William J. Clinton
President George W. Bush
