ChemEng's Account talk...

*sighs*

Surprise family visit pulled me away from comp at noon. Stuck riding the I-train down for another day. My brother just finished the Joint EOD school and came by to visit through Thursday. Itll be great fun no doubt. But my returns are going to hate me for being distracted this afternoon...

Oh well...

So many things are way more important than money.

(It just sucks that we need money to enjoy so many of those things)

I agree with you completely gibovin.

I only wish staying in the I fund wouldnt hurt me so bad today. :) Although I do get a -FVC that will help out some.

1 more day of leave. And another huge drop in my TSP last night. Im getting out of it today though. Hopefully with the help of a -FVC, it wont be *that* painful.

On the plus side, my brother and I installed 3 ceiling fans and a new toilet yesterday. Was a much better time than seeing the markets crumble...

I saw this story and thought it was worth sharing. Definately puts things into perspective:

The American investment banker was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellow fin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them. The Mexican replied, "Only a little while." The American then asked, "Why didn't you stay out longer and catch more fish?" The Mexican said, "With this I have more than enough to support my family's needs."

The American then asked, "But what do you do with the rest of your time?" The Mexican fisherman said, "I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos, I have a full and busy life."

The American scoffed, "I am a Harvard MBA and could help you. You should spend more time fishing; and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat: With the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats. Eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor; eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then Los Angeles and eventually New York where you will run your ever-expanding enterprise."

The Mexican fisherman asked, "But, how long will this all take?" To which the American replied, "15 to 20 years." "But what then?" asked the Mexican. The American laughed and said that's the best part. "When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions." "Millions?...Then what?"

The American said, "Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos.

I guess the terms Jihads and rag heads are not politically correct in your work environment on an ARMY base. Sorry I was so insensitive - I'll be more careful in the future.

Birch,

I will say the same thing to the soldiers I work with everyday. When you have a Army as diversified as ours is, saying comments like that just isnt called for. In fact, my building right now has an E7 with last name Mohammad who would take the same offense. Hes been to the sand box twice and also works on an ARMY base.

Short term play into I today. Looks like a good buying opportunity. Will move back into C or S after this bounce more than likely. I would like to have made the decision a few minutes closer to noon, but bosses day meeting is getting in the way. :suspicious:

So with all the talk on the boards about trade limitations, here's something completely different. :)

We are having our first child in about 3 weeks (depending on how he cooperates with the schedule.) So to help with that we have put together a baby registry through Amazon. We've been pretty fortunate with things from friends that have recently been pregnant or had things in storage, but there' still some pretty big holes in what we need.

The baby registry is shown on the right side of my blog and any help would be greatly appreciated. Everyone have a great holiday weekend!

/end shameless pandering

ChemEng:

Do you mind getting something used? Is it going to be a boy or a girl? I have niece and nephews less than 4 yrs old, so I am guessing that their parents probably still have a lot of their baby stuffs (I hope), so if you don't mind used stuffs, I'll be glad to check and send you some of the things on your Amazon list (used, not new from Amazon)

I had the most unmovable belief that we were all born sinners until I had my first child. No matter how incredible your wife is, or your parents (or anyone else), you will never see a life more pure and perfect than your firstborn. In a very huge way I wish I could know what it's like to have the baby develop in me - to grow into completness - feel it move around and stuff - and know that my body is there to provide all the nutrients and keep him (her) safe. Down the line I would imagine a lot of guys feel they were deprived in that manner. I hope your son is healthy and everything turns out just the way you would have prayed and hoped. I can't help but believe, no matter what your religion is, you will be fully convinced that not only is this new life pure in every possible way - but there is no way possible they would have the capacity to sin in their new born condition.

May God Himself pour out His blessings on your son - and may your lives be filled with happiness and joy as he grows into a man!:)

Congrats ChemEng on the baby! I have a 3 1/2 yr old and a 1 1/2 year old... we just gave tons of newborn stuff away some friends that just had a newborn. But if you have a girl, we'll have tons of stuff for toddlers.

On a sidenote, babycenter.com is a fun site for tracking the baby's development.

Congrats Chem...My last one was 28 years ago....seems like yesterday.. Enjoy...it's amazing how it all goes by so fast...

Thanks Paladin.

Had a great birthday yesterday. It started with my boss asking what its like turning 28 on the 28th. He said his was too long ago to remember. :) Some good natured ribbing is always a good way to start the day off. It ended with a nice quiet home cooked meal at home with me getting a day to rest from doing my home repairs to talk more about baby plans.

It could have only been better if I didnt have to work. But c'est la vie.

Some baby updates (for those who are tracking). Thanks so far for all the well wishes and positive thoughts from everyone on the board.

Just got lots of details right now without any pictures. But heres where everything is:

Wife's water broke last night at around 8PM. We got to the hospital around 9PM or so and she was already starting contractions, but was 2cm's or so dilated and about 70% effaced. That went on through the early morning until about 9AM when she was ready to push. At 1134, we got our first son named Ethan Scott Smith.

Here's his stats:
Length: 20.5 inches
Weight: 8lbs 14ounce
Head Length: 14.5 inches
Hair: Blonde/Brown
Eyes: Blue

Everything is looking good with both him and his mother so thats a plus. She had some significant tearing, so healing isn't going to be the most fun for her. But the nurses are all saying that by Thursday she will be able to come home.

Scott
