Legendary stuntwoman Kitty O’Neil died Friday in South Dakota at the age of 72, according to multiple reports.
O’Neil was best-known for her work as Lynda Carter’s stunt double on “Wonder Woman.” She also worked hit movies such as “The Blues Brothers” and “Smokey and the Bandit II.”
The stuntwoman lost her hearing when she was 5 months old after she contracted measles and smallpox, according to The Hollywood Reporter. She told People in 1977 she learned to read lips.

She made history when she set the land-speed record for women drivers in 1976. She still holds that record, the BBC reported.
O’Neil was so popular that she got her own Barbie doll and a television movie about her life: “Silent Victory: The Kitty O’Neil Story” in 1979. “West Wing” star Stockard Channing portrayed her in the film. In 1982 she retired from stunt work.
O’Neil died at Eureka Community Hospital in South Dakota of pneumonia, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Who’s going to help Shirley make her dreams come true now?

Even without "Laverne & Shirley," Penny Marshall –who died Monday at 75 of complications from diabetes, her spokeswoman told CBS and the Los Angeles Times – would count as Hollywood royalty. She was the sister of late TV mogul Garry Marshall and the ex-wife of Rob Reiner, which ties her to two great comedy traditions.

More importantly, on her own she became one of the most successful female film directors of all time, with hits such as "Big," "Awakenings" and "A League of Their Own" to her credit.

Yet for millions of Americans, she remains Laverne DeFazio, the gravel-voiced, gangly Milwaukee brewery worker with the tough act, soft heart, and the big “L” on her sweater. Easily riled and easily hurt, Laverne was the more down-to-earth realist to Shirley Feeney’s (Cindy Williams) boo-boo-kitty loving idealist. They were vastly different, but shared the same dream in their 1950s-set blue-collar sitcom: to find true love and a way out of that basement apartment.
