Aviator Guy's Account Talk

My wife and I drove to Phoenix and noticed a couple interesting things. I stopped by a Best Buy store to pick up a lap top for my daughter in law and noticed very small numbers of customers. Also noticed very light traffic on our way back to Los Angeles on Memorial Day around 5pm. Traffic is usually busy at this time of day in LA, especially on a Holiday weekend. I’m not an expert in traffic, but it was very noticeable. I think the 4 bucks per gallon is really starting have a noticeable effect.:cool:

Check out this new solar upstart company (Sunrgi). They're in the process of producing a technology that will make solar power generation cheaper than fossil fuel power generation. Looks like .05 cents per kilowatt hour will be possible with solar!!! This is something you will hear about and it’s really good news. This is a private startup company, but when they go public I will invest in their stock because this technology will be huge in the future. Enjoy the site and soak it in, good luck!:cool:

I don't know about this company. It looks like a long shot, like trying to hit the moon with popcorn. None of the partners have any knowledge in this technology.

Some interesting facts from my Annual Activity Summary report sent by TSP for the year ending 2007…

Closing balance as of Dec 2007
Divided by
Lifetime Contributions = 303 Percent

303 Percent
Divided by
21 Years in TSP (since Jan 1987) = 14.2 percent average return per year.

2007 Personal Investment Performance = 11.37%

Note: This is the first time I have ever seen the TSP provide us with Lifetime Contributions. If you know your years in TSP, total balance and lifetime contributions, you can get a good snap shot of your average interest earned. Anyway, good luck with your TSP investments!!!:cool:

I checked my last quarter statement for 2007 and there is no mention of Lifttime Contributions. Does your amount include contributions for this period or over the lifetime? Interesting.

No, it wasn’t the quarterly statement it was the annual statement I received earlier this year. And what makes it interesting is that it shows your lifetime contribution!! So, you can see how you’re doing long term as far as interest earned over your lifetime in the TSP. This is the first time I have ever seen this figure and it’s a very important number. I have been with the TSP since it first came out, so my interest earned over this period is excellent. Anyway, don’t forget to max out your contributions, especially when you start out in TSP and good luck with your investments!:cool:

I work in Telecommunications field, so I feel comfortable with technology, especially when it deals with electronics. This company is taking advantage of two well known things to boost their solar efficiency. They track the sun and also focus the sun’s energy to the PV panels. I have seen folks on the science channel who have done this and it’s nothing new. You can use a minifying lens to focus this energy in the same way.

What makes it unique is how they deal with the excessive heat away from the PV. From looking at the photographs, it looks like they are using fins, similar to an air cooled motorcycle engine to dissipate the heat. I know they are using something more, but they don’t go into a lot of detail. They also claim more efficient semiconductors. And semiconductors and heat combined will reduce reliability, but they claim less heat than a standard PV panel.

They combine all of the best in all of these techniques to make electrical power on the cheap. Unlike a gas generator that requires you to purchase fuel, solar only requires sunlight and we have lots of that here in Los Angeles. Once you have a solar panel there is no recurring cost other than maybe some rags to keep the panels clean. Anyway, I’m going to keep a very close eye on this company.:cool:

Seven Atlantic Hurricanes for 2008??

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) - Hurricane forecaster William Gray called Friday for seven Atlantic hurricanes, three of them major, during the 2008 season.

Gray's team at Colorado State University issued the prediction six months before the June-November season begins.
The preliminary forecast calls for a total of 13 named storms in the Atlantic. It also says it is probable that at least one major hurricane will hit the U.S. coastline.
"Despite fairly inactive 2006 and 2007 hurricane seasons, we believe that the Atlantic basin is still in an active hurricane cycle," Gray said. "This active cycle is expected to continue at least for another decade or two."
Gray has been forecasting hurricanes for more than two decades, and his predictions are watched closely by emergency responders and others in coastal areas.
The predictions are not always on the mark. Gray initially forecast nine hurricanes for the 2007 Atlantic hurricane season, and later lowered that prediction to eight. Only six hurricanes formed.
Cooler water and the presence of wind shears in the central tropical Atlantic explained the difference, said Phil Klotzbach, a member of Gray's team and the lead author of the forecast. Cooler temperatures inhibit hurricane formation, and wind shears can tear developing hurricanes apart.
The team also predicted nine hurricanes for the 2006 season, when only five developed. Klotzbach said that in seven of the past nine years, the team correctly predicted whether the season would be above or below average.

I’m looking at jumping back into stocks short term. European stocks are way down. I think the oil inventory numbers later today will show slowing demand, but the big job numbers out on Friday is going to be worse than expected… Right now, the SP is down for the month -1.47%, the “I” fund is down only -1.16, but we will get a +FV today. So the “I” fund is really only down -.63% for the month… I’m sitting on the fence right now…

If the SP takes off prior to the cutoff and the Europe markets stay down, I will jump into the “I” fund. If the SP takes a dive prior to the cutoff, I will probably jump into the “C” fund. If the SP is only + or - .5% at cutoff, I will probably just stay sitting on the fence.

I enclosed an interesting article on solar energy. Solar is looking a lot more attractive since the huge spike in fossil fuel. Check it out!

Oil is jumped up 10 a barrel to over 132 again in the last two days! On my way to work, my favorite gas station was showing 2.42 per gal yesterday! The poor jobs report this morning is also hurting futures!! Not too much good news on anything this morning other than the weak dollar is helping the “I” fund maintain.

I programmed a reminder to auto alert me every year, “Sell in May and Go Away”. So, I sold in May and try to stay out of the markets, but I jumped back into the “I” fund a couple days ago! I should have listened to my own advice, LOL… Anyway, I’m jumping out of the “I” fund back into the “G” fund. If I lose 2.4% in the “I” fund by COB today, my 2nd QTR interest return will still be 6%. Anytime you can average 2% a month is ok, so I still feel good about the 2nd QTR overall. Anyway, enjoy your summer and good luck with your TSP investing!:cool:

I have been with the TSP since inception and I made an IFT on June 6th prior to the cutoff from I to G. To ensure this IFT, I did it about two hours prior to the cutoff rather than waiting until the last minute. When I checked my fund yesterday, the IFT never happened. I know I made this IFT and recorded it in my log, but the TSP said it didn’t happen. I’m totally disappointed in our TSP staff. With their recent changes to the 2008 IFT limits and declining customer service it has gone from a model retirement savings plan to one of the worst! I’m totally disappointed in our TSP staff, it’s just really sad what is has come to.

When you make an electronic IFT, ALWAYS do one of the following:
  • Get e-mail confirmation. It asks you if you want to do this before you do the IFT. or;
  • Make a SCREENIE. I make two, one of the confirmation, then I get out of the IFT screen, back in, and try to make another IFT. You get a screen that says you already have one pending that day. I print that too. I get my confirmations snail mail, but I have those two screenies just in case.
You can also FOIA the records of logins to your account. I don't know if this will help, they will probably say you logged in to check your balance and didn't make an IFT.

Aviator Guy,
Taking a quick break and saw this post. That happened to me ONCE and never again.

The best way to know it's happening the same day; especially before the 12:00 EST deadline is:

Make your ITF and it will show what you're doing

CLOSE OUT - AND GO BACK IN

Request to do an ITF - and it will show "An ITF is pending that will transpire the end of that same day"

THAT'S THE CONFIRMATION YOU NEED.

It doesn't make any difference if you use email or whatever - as long as you go back - attempt to make another ITF - and it tells you the one you previously put in is already going through - then you know it will.

It's a double check policy I've learned to do and you'll never miss again.

Good advice, thanks!

This makes it two down with only one more to go. I just hope I’m not in stocks when the third one goes down. I know that little short guy won’t like it. The big question is if the sand around the third one becomes glass or not, let’s hope it doesn’t come to that!!:cool:

North Korea Blasts Cooling Tower at Yongbyon Nuclear Plant
By Heejin Koo and Viola Gienger

June 27 (Bloomberg) -- North Korea destroyed part of its Yongbyon nuclear plant where it processed weapons-grade plutonium in a symbolic gesture today, after the U.S. said it will begin removing the communist nation from its terrorism blacklist.
The move comes a day after Kim Jong Il's regime submitted an inventory of nuclear plants and materials, as required under its disarmament accord with the U.S., South Korea, China, Russia and Japan.
The explosion completely demolished Yongbyon's 20-meter (66- foot) concrete cooling tower at around 5 p.m. Korea time, footage on South Korea's MBC Television showed. MBC and CNN were among five media organizations from countries involved in disarmament talks invited to witness and report on today's event at Yongbyon.
``This is a very important and significant step,'' Sung Kim, director of the U.S. State Department's Korea office, who attended the blast today, said in an interview according to the MBC footage. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, currently in Japan on a tour of North Asia, said today she has ``no plans'' to visit North Korea.
Sung Kim will probably meet with North Korean officials during his visit and discuss remaining steps the state must take to disable its nuclear programs, U.S. State Department spokesman Tom Casey said yesterday. He will also discuss ``some ideas on verification'' of the dossier handed over yesterday.

My YTD is still beating the C and I funds, but not by much. I have decided to pull out of the “I” fund and into the G fund COB 7-14-08. I will do this only if the S&P is rising in the green (above 0 percent from 1130am to 1145am)… Good luck with your TSP investments!!:cool:

Aviator,
The perspective on the markets has changed significantly since you posted your last message. I trust that you have already read and factored into your decision the interesting daily commentary posted by Tom, as well as the incoming news events on the bail-out and potential rally. Best wishes!

I’m still in the “I” fund and the Interfund transfer was cancelled. I gave my wife a step by step process on how to cancel the transfer since I was unable to do it myself. I was in an airliner flying between Los Angeles and Houston. I didn’t give her the instructions on how to change it on the TSP Talk website, only the TSP site.:cool:

I was really close to pulling the trigger on getting back in stocks (C or I) this morning. One report of a huge terrorist attack in China that’s not being reported caught my eye. Being so close to the games, it makes you wonder if they have something planned down the road when the world focus is on the games later this week.

Saber rattling again from that really short guy again. Test firing anti-ship missiles, etc. etc… I bet the USN techs are tweaking all of their anti-ship defense systems and they are on a hair trigger too. Just seems like lots of volatile fuel in the Persian Gulf right now, all it takes is one spark. The shipping will stop or slow down if they feel their cargo is in harms way.

The storm in the Gulf of Mexico looks like it might not turn into anything major. I heard that some of the rigs were caught off guard and some of their crews have to ride it out. I went through two large Hurricanes on aircraft carriers, and I can’t imagine riding out a large storm on one of those rigs!!

I’m still in the “G” fund and want to get back in soon, but just not yet…:cool:

Hey AG,
I heard about the Chinese terrorist attack this morning also, but had all but forgotten my thoughts when I heard about it - same as yours, whether more might be planned for when the Games actually begin.
Odd how it wasn't more widespread in mainstream news, huh? :suspicious:
Thanks for bringing this up!!
