50 of the Worst Charities

What concerns me is that most are cancer funds, children funds, veterans funds, or Law Enforcement/Fire Fighter funds.

Someone is making money off the generosity of donors and it's not the people who are supposed to be the recipients.

Nothing new there. More reason to check out the name of the charity and find out if it is 501c(3) qualified and what the admin and fundraising costs are. If it is a cold call telephone solicitation the caller will usually give you a different name each time you ask who they represent. Fishing. I am guilty of giving to fraudulant or admin heavy organizations in the past and have a splendid looking coffee mug complete with flag and eagle from an organization that apparently doesn't exist.

The annual CFC booklet is a good place to look, it does list admin costs. The CFC used to have a cap of 25% for admin and fundraising costs but they got rid of that years ago. The booklet is still a good place to look in order to find an org. Then you can check it out further and make a decision to donate privately or through CFC. Of course if you donate privately you may make your manager look bad if the thermometer doesn't get full.

Caveat Emptor as they say.

CROOKS are everywhere, these need to go to jail BIGTIME!

Holy frijoles, FWM. I agree about the charity thing. Best hold my thoughts about who is an idiot. Maybe it's time to investigate the law about what is really a charity?

I usually give to various charities through the Combined Federal Campaign each year, and to an org. called Feed the Children, Paralyzed Vets of America, and the homeless guy on the corner near work holding up a sign that reads "hell, why lie. i need a beer."

Admin cost % has been one of my criteria for some time, my dad only just woke up and noticed the low-grade coffee sometime this past year-he's always been good with money, now he's even better.

Idiot Glenn Beck often says Gov't programs for poor or other things should be abandoned and replaced by charities. This story should prove how stupid that (and Glenn Beck) is.
As inefficient as some gov't programs might be, they come no where as close as inefficient (and/or corrupt) as these!

Childrens Cancer Fund of America...American Breast Cancer Foundation only have 10-20% of money going to their causes...pocketing the rest??? Holy $hit!!!

At least Medicare has 97% of money going directly to health coverage...only 3% overhead.

Can't keep it non-political can you FWM... dang, you have a serious agenda to push... does it give you heartburn?

Sometimes you can get good data on a 501(c)(3) through Guidestar:

GuideStar nonprofit reports and Forms 990 for donors, grantmakers and businesses

They try to compile filings with the IRS, reviews by various agencies, and financial data about the organization. It's not perfect, and it's not complete, but it can be helpful if you want to look at the IRS filings for your favorite charity.
(P.S.- and No, Buster, I don't give to any of those phone soliciting "police associations" for that very reason. I knew about those scams long, long ago. )

P.P.S.-0 If you want to get a good laugh- do a search for "tea party" among the "charities" there and see who files their required IRS 990 forms, and what they report (or fail to report) as their "charitable activities". You can register and have access to IRS form 990's. The Georgia Tea Party says they raised a little over $14,000, and their "charitible function" was to petition Justice Kagan to recuse herself from ruling on the Affordable Care Act. Now YOU TELL ME why the Georgia Tea Party people are not in jail for fraudulently using 501(c)(4) tax-exempt status for that. If I were on the jury, I'd convict of tax evasion....

et tu James... I don't remember seeing an * before this thread title...

Thanks for the link, I will check it out later :D
