what age did you retire? or what age do you want to retire?

I will retire at 55 yrs and 10 mo with 34 yrs and 9 mo service in well less than one year. The US Postal Service is the worst run organization on earth, and I cannot stand another day of it. I plan on a second career repairing something. Even though I can take out of TSP in the year starting that I turn 55 and leave, it would be nice to leave it alone for a few years. The Social Security supplement will help.

I am signed up on the USA jobs to receive an email daily for transfers to other government departments. So far no luck.

I cannot imagine any organization including other government agencies being run as bad as this one, deliberatly taking the worst candidate and promoting them time after time.

Actually there was an article in the WSJ talking about how the chances of an early death increase with the greater amount of time spent in retirement. It went to say that people who worked until 60 lived the longest. I'm sure the concept has been examined before but people probably just go nuts with all of that extra time on their hands.
When I was in the service they used to tell us the average military retiree only lived five years. I think that was all a myth. We have some people working here who retired from the military 15 years ago and they're still going strong.

BeaverState,

You raise a point worth investigating!
I don't think the problem is just within the military.

1. If the retiree only lived 5 years. What were the facts surrounding this short retirement span.
2. If the retiree is still going strong after 15 years, what is this attributed too.

If we delete sudden illnesses, accidents, etc. Is there a psychological factor that plays into the picture, or is there something else??
