TSP Poker Club

He might have been mistaken, he posted up above that he had a royal that got doubleteamed. I don't recall, just know he got caught in the middle.

Flush beats a straight, Full house beats a Flush, 4 of a kind beats Full House, Straight Flush beats 4 of a kind. Royal flush is the highest possible Straight Flush, therefore nothing can beat it.

Here it is:

Yes.... FS called it a "Royal Straight".... so it was not a flush. Still that was a great hand... just not enough for those full houses. ughh.

My bad, I knew he said royal straight up above, by which he meant straight flush. so I got confused when I wrote the comment on tonights game. anyways, straight flush also beats full house, so I still don't understand how our 2 full houses beat him last game. but that's just me, am sure everyone else gets it even if I don't. something to do with less chips, he was very short stacked vs me and KO.

he did not have a straight flush, he had top straight (t-j-q-k-a), yes he had four hearts but the ten was a spade so no flush, there was no flush there. any flush beats any straight. any full house beats any flush, any 4 of a kind beats any full house, any straight flush (5h-6h-7h-8h-9h) beats any 4 of a kind, and a royal flush (th-jh-qh-kh-ah) beats them all.

i assume by the word "royal" he meant ace-high (non-flushed) straight, although the term "royal" is usually reserved for an ace-high straight flush. against that board that contained a pair of sevens, a straight is a weak hand. if the board is showing any pair, you have to be aware of the possibility of at minimum three-of-a-kind, as any hole card that matches the board pair makes a set. but you also have to be aware that a player can have both hole cards that match the board, in this case a seven for the set and a random ten that paired with another card on the board to make a full house, sevens full of tens. when the flop came with no hearts to match this ace and jack of hearts in the hole, and only two more cards coming, there was no way a flush was going to hit, the best he could do is top straight. this is a dangerous hand to play against a paired flop.

with three players in that pot (including himself), it was a given that at least one person had a straight beat, or the balls to bluff bet like they had a straight beat, which does not happen often because as fogsailing certainly knows now, a made ace-high straight is a difficult hand to force someone to fold. the only unlikely thing that happened in that hand was that both of the other players had a ten and a seven in the hole. it would've been more probable to see one of the others with a pocket pair of tens for a larger full house (ttt-77) win versus the smaller full house (777-tt), or both players with the 7 in the hole but different paired cards like one with another ten and one with another queen. either way, a straight is dead 95% of the time in that hand. throw it away like a bad girlfriend.

one of the tricks to poker is to not look at your hand and fall in love with your pretty cards, instead you need to see the board and reverse engineer what other mean mistresses could be lurking out there. unfortunately, this lesson is usually learned the hard way, the best teacher is pain. pain is often preceded by confusion, as in "why does this hurt so bad?".

no the best hand always wins. if he had a royal flush (he didn't), then he would've won exactly as many chips from each of you that he had himself put in the pot. and you two would've split the remainder with tied next best hands. the best hand always wins, but you can only win as many chips as you put in, from each player in the pot. the rest of the chips go into a side pot to be split by the big stacks after the main pot is settled.

poker is a game best played not for "fun", but for "keeps". playing for "pride" is a poor surrogate as some folks have no pride anyways. with nothing of real value to lose, there is little incentive to not lose. if you are losing real hard earned money it perks up your senses a bit. if you are losing your clothes, it perks up other things as well. poker is best played for real money or real clothes. try it, you'll see.

all becomes clear now. my logic brain is satisfied about that last game with fog, at last.

And yes, I've figured out by now that falling in love with the pretty cards in hand is not the wisest of mindsets, unfortunately I still get lost in the music now and then until the music stops. and then I remember I wasn't supposed to do that. cards, pretty pretty cards. oops, someone has prettier cards than me. dang, I did it again. But I found a good cash game last night after our play, recouped my losses from past several cash games. pocket is much fuller of pennies after that game. I feel better. play money, not real. it still hurts when I do something dumb with play money, like fall in love with the pretty cards in hand, which I'm not doing as often as earlier on. learning by doing, the lessons sink in, practice makes perfect, or at least better.

ok, maybe my poker tips are not the right way to say it, maybe i talk too much. let me put it terms anyone should be able to understand .

if you are holed up suited ace paint and flop comes one big two paired rags and rainbow none of your paint, then the best you got with improbable runner runner catches on the turn and river is a big straight. against a paired board you are gonna get used, every time. don't fall in love with that pretty thing, throw it away like a bad bad girlfriend. keep this song cue'd up and when you see this setup jam the volume and throw it away. you will keep more of your chips this way and maybe not go broke. until next time some pretty cards flash at you.

I play for "fun" as my statistics attest....need to finish Chapter 9 don't I....oh well...BUT I have to admit one thing though, those pretty cards did capture and glamour me...how often do you see a straight with AKQJ10....very rare.....like a black pearl...even though I lost I was glad to see it...
