TSP Millionaires

Still closer to $0 than $1 Million, but that littlish number on the left of my balance is ready to pop over...

The last time it popped over was in October 2010. Seems to be accelerating - much as Stoplight's post suggested. Three years for $100K. Yummy.

Need about 2% - 2.5% gain in the account. Watching with baity breath:)

For informative thread

I'm 42 and have 260,000 in my TSP, I'm currently 100%S and max my contributions at 17,500. My wife is 43 and has 210,000 and has the same allocations. I'm planning on working until I'm 65 but my wife will probably retire at 60. We also plan to make the catch-up contributions when we hit 50.

I've played with the calculators and the range is pretty big, we could have anywhere from 3-5 mill by the time I'm 65.

Is a combined 5 mill realistic in yall's opinions?
Boghie hit the good one, retiring at different ages.

Also, since I can only guess what you make, I would say the $3 Mill is definitely achieveable. I never take the high estimate away from the table. I always shoot for a lower to mid range in calculation. Too many items can change in between now and then.

I would ask the question, "Is a taxable retirement the way to go?" Are you utilizing the best engines for your retirement income? Are you balanced between Roth's/IRA/Stocks to aggressively address the investment/return ratio?

Good Luck!

what is this

I found out from other website for this strategy (found by mstrzerg) very interesting with the average return of 42% for the last 8 yrs, then this may help me to become millionaire sooner. YTD gain more than 15% (this beat my estimate of 12% average).

Good Luck!

Me and my wife both max out Roth IRAs that are mostly invested in ETFs with dividend paying stocks, tax free income baby

Have tested back to 2008. Rates of return are very good going back to 2008. However current year just above 5%-- that is with exact method posted and no deviation by switching f for s or other funds. Will post once finished...going back to at least 2004.

Thanks for working on it. There are 5 different methods on the site. Are you looking at the traffic light system?

I haven't looked at those systems. Just did a simple excel spreadsheet taking buy closing price in Tsp compared to sale price and computed straight increase percentage for each buy/ sell transaction. When done will try to post it. My percentages are not as high as those claimed in methodology results but all except 2013 are very high.. I think my computation is valid. Will post so anyone can ck it.

Not sure how good it is if it does not do well in 2013. On the other hand, most systems, except buy and hold, have not done very well either. I guess buy and hold may be the best strategy for a bull market?????????

Hi.. Got data entered back to 2004. Interesting ..some years very high and others at around 19 to 20 % . 2008 was very high...so that was interesting.. But my numbers do not match the claimed results. Doing a little more analysis. Going to compute returns for all funds using those time frames and look for patterns ...seasonality. I think maybe this year... 2013 Just is so different from other years. Someone mentioned it was based on MACD..so not sure how that plays in. There were some outliers in terms of single periods that were very high..like 17% and 37% in little more tan a month..made the return for the whole year. will try to finish it up tomorrow and post by Wednesday.

Here is a bit more data ... shows outliers.
Ex. purchased I fund on Oct 26, 2008 and sold it on Nov 8, 2008.
The closing TSP price for I was 12.0689 on Oct 26 and $14.2075 on Nov 8, 2008. $14.2075/12.0689 = 17.72 % increase in your investment for that buy/sell transaction. Please let me know if there is a flaw in this logic. Thx DB Annie :)

And some have done really, really poorly...

One of the greatest Hedge Fund Managers, David Tepper, says he is still bullish on stocks. If you invested $1 million with him in 1993 and didn't pull out you would have around $149 million.
David Tepper Performance - Business Insider

Unlike most Fund Managers/ Companies with hundreds or thousands of financial analysts working for them, Tepper only has about 38 financial analysts working for him. He has fewer stock holdings than BT :} With that beings said, I think a small correction is in order near term, however, I believe the "buy and hold" strategy is the way to go for at least the next 6-12 mos.

Very impressive except 2013.

Hi JKJ.. Do you know where I can get more closing prices for TSP going back from 2003 to early 1990's?
Not yet uploaded results because I don' t know how. Just see instructions on uploading pics n video. Do you know how to upload spreadsheet?

Yes... 2013 is really low except for those of us not playing enough. Really looks like this strategy works great in the really bad years. How odd!

I think I will use it but modify a bit for this year but keep eye on market for big market turns. Analysis is showing about 300% total return for the years going back to 2004. I was able to filter by investment period and found two periods that had better returns using a different fund for two periods...which caused returns to go up around 311% or so...gotta look at it again. I've got all that info in spreadsheet.
