Anyone remember the last time Al Qaeda gained an operational stronghold in a country? It was Afghanistan in the 90's. The result was they had a safe place to meet and plan, which led to 9/11.

We blew the opportunity to establish a base in Iraq that could have wiped out these guys within 2-3 days. So now it looks like we're going to watch them take over a country again, only this time with oil reserves and large amounts of cash.....for planning operations....against us.

Can't take them all on at once Egg...Let's regroup a while after this last 7 years freeing a country from a murderous dictator, who's country is key to stability in the region...NK?, well I think their neighbors China will take care of them..Done deal..And Iran?..well, They may just have a little nuclear incident before you know it...Those reactors and uranium enriching plants were put together pretty fast ya know....who knows what will happen....Bottom line, the original question was about Iraq..let's not deflect .

Which Saddam did at one time have WMDs at least..Ask Israel about the Scud attacks during Gulf war 1....Ask the 100's of thousands of Kurds he gassed with WMDs (his own countrymen)..But besides that one detail..Unless your selective memory is off as most liberal's is, the UN inspectors were lead on wild goose chases will Saddam played musical shell and ball games with Nukes and other items that the UN sanctions forbid him to have..They did dig up a whole Jet plane in the desert..who really knows..the WMD may still be buried somewhere in Iraq or Syria may have a nice stockpile of them now..I'm glad GW erred on the side of caution.....But this is old news to most of us that actually watched and followed the reasons for the Iraq invasion..Maybe the Kuwait thing had a lot to do with it..Leopard's spots ya know, can't change them..

The war was not for nothing, no. But don't be fooled by the WMD argument, it was just a plausible distraction which is why it didn't matter that none were found. Our planners knew what they wanted and they got it.

1.) A permanent base for confronting Iran on its west flank. (Afghanistan on the east completes the encirclement.)
2.) A means of denying the resources to others.

We now have a stranglehold on the world's greatest strategic prize and a ready check on the main threat to same.

Whether it was necessary, or worth it, or whether it could have been achieved by other means, are different questions.
This is the way of international power politics.
