The Right to Bear Arms Thread.

ha! good one.

my son had a heck of a time figuring out the joke, finally said "hey that's not a rifle, it's got a battery, it's for screwing, them dirty varmints, that'll sure fix up a house!"

couldn't have said it better myself, screw them dirty varmints, i can think of a few houses that need fixing.

now for some local news, consider carefully who you vote for sherriff.

talked to mine this afternoon, a man of the people, at a creek crossing down a dirt road, maybe barely passable this soon after the thaw, been watching it for a couple of weeks, we target practice up near there. saw two northen pike make it up the shallows, literally right in front of my feet, but haven't bought our licenses yet this year. so we were just racing sticks down the stream and skipping rocks.

was scoping out an odd set of ripples and a new crack in the slab when he pulled up. we talked a bit, both carrying open, neither one nervous.

agreed it was a bit of a stretch and i hadn't planned on jamming it on my own this far from town, but hey now that there's two of us here... he said if i get stuck tell someone about it, i said if you get stuck first thing i'll do is pull you out, and i won't tell no one about it. so he crossed first, shouted back an assessment from the other side, yes there is a big hole there now, stay to the right, i'll tell the road crew about it.

and we both went about our day. now that's America.

 good story burro. Nobody I know likes to advertise their predicament by calling for help on the radio when they get stuck, not til they've been at it a few hours. Like to keep it quiet if we can.

Ran into a stockman on his horse looking for stray stock in the snow late fall one year, had a bunch of city slickers with me. Stockman wearing wooly chaps, big handlebar mustache, big hat, side arm open carry, rifle on saddle. All the city folk's eyes got big and bigger when they scoped full gear, especially the side arm, all they could talk about on the way home.

My spouse was in law enforcement for over a decade. He says it's not the sidearm that you can see that you worry about. :D

eye contact, an honest handshake, and lack of criminal intent have a lot to do with it too.

we pretty good at smelling bullshit out here.

tools of the trade, and neccesary at times for survival. my pickup always has a shovel, axe, steel bucket, and tow strap, in addition to the 'scoped full gear'. extra water too. gave the pulaski away to a friend one time when the need arose, always wanted another, one of these days.

all of these things work best when you don't have to use them, but good to have around none the less.

We have open carry here, just don't see it much. Passing acquaintence with former biker in a church I attended years ago, took him years after becoming a church-goer to give up the mini-pistol he hid behind his belt buckle. He told us about it in church one day after he'd given it up.

Tools of the trade, definitely. wouldn't want to be way out there with a horse broke leg, without the pistol. Pulaski saved my bacon late one day years ago. Came back up the dead end dirt road I'd gone down earlier in the day. 9-inch diameter green tree, lots and lots of good sized branches, had fallen across the road, blocking me in. used the pulaski to chop the top 8 feet off, drove around, called it good. Fire crew found it later and cleaned it all the way out.
