The Patio

Aaahhh. Home at last to the patio. My patio that is. What a commute today, both ways.

But first, this IS a TSP site so what about that market?

Help, I am losing thousands of dollars a day. Not every day, some days I gain a few hundred. I sometimes wonder if I should ride this sucker down but to bail now would make it a real loss. Guess I have to be hoof-hearted. But really, when is it time to try to time?

I got a nice e-mail from DFAS today and was going to share it but RMI beat me to it in the applicable forum. I liked RMIs sentiment. One more form to either keep forever or maybe be required to file with IRS. Just because DFAS says they sent a form to IRS doesn’t mean anything. Twice in the last 19 years I have had to send a paper copy of a 1099R to IRS to prove I paid taxes on retirement pay. I did like the ad about keeping forms secure by turning off paper copies. Like DFAS has never been hacked.

The morning commute actually moved along pretty good. I didn’t have to slow down until I was two miles from my exit and only had to actually stop once. Just the usual idiots jumping in and out of lanes doing 20+ mph more than traffic. I just did the usual get in my preferred lane (2[SUP]nd[/SUP] from right) and did my usual speed limit +9. (OK, maybe up to 15). This evening as I was leaving work I planned to take the interstate in spite of the usual stop and go for the first couple miles when UPRR made a decision for me. They were switching at the adjacent yard and blocking the road. They usually only block the road for 5-20 minutes at a time. Crap shoot. Plus traffic backups forever. So I took the road less travelled, aka “surface streets”. Well the main surface street has been under construction for about a year but normally moves faster than the interstate. Today was an exception and after crawling a while I got close enough to see emergency and retrieval vehicles blocking the road. So I hung a u-ey as we used to say and back track. I get to the street I came from and see traffic still backed up through the intersection. So I go south, what’s two miles added to the trip? I head west and find that stopped up. So I head south again. What’s four more miles? This street is moving but crazy with a lot of people in a hurry talking on cell phones. After about four miles they all peel off north and I enjoy a nice empty country road and looking at and smelling the dairy farms. I get to my North street and back to suburbia. Another backup. UPRR is switching out some cars on the same track I avoided earlier. Those guys have it in for me! It was probably the same train. Nothing to do but enjoy the wait. Could be worse, traffic going south was backed up over a mile. Commute time for 15 miles (19 or 20 including the detours) only about 1:15.

I haven’t counted it lately but I believe I have less than 400 workdays left.

What’s it like in your neck of the woods?

What’s it like in your neck of the woods?

72.6 miles one way, ~145 miles round trip daily, all but 4 miles of it divided interstate. on a good day it takes an hour, but in the winter it can take your life. there used to be only 4 stop signs between my house and work, now there is 6, but no stoplights. also, i tend to stand on it, it helps me think, i have lots of time to think.

Things are better today. Plus I am taking AL tomorrow and Monday. I finally got around to installing a countdown app on the “new” laptop and customizing it to my work days and holidays. I was being optimistic. I have 453 work days left counting AL and safety awards.

Thanks. If you live in the area I think you live (don’t be too specific here) and want to feel my pain, some morning around 5:20 get on Bell to 101S to 10E and drive close to 17. Take the Avenue of your choice to try to escape. No need to go further you will get the idea. Once life slows down for me a bit we should have a beverage together.

Based on where you live you ought to be able to cut that time down a bit during good weather. Maybe a faster vehicle? One that doesn’t vibrate so alarmingly at around 89?

All meant in good fun burro. I have only two stop signs but six stoplights between me and the interstate. Then three between interstate and workplace. Plus UPRR crossing. I am pretty sure I am the only one who obeys the stop signs and part of the total that obey the stop lights. It is exciting.

Thanks both for sharing.

HI PO. We are in the same area. Moved here 2 years ago to avoid the harsh winters.

One of the great things about being retired is that I don't have to travel at ANY RUSH HOUR. I decide when and where, etc. Everything is better. The only thing that doesn't change is that the SO's seem to take on more authority.:D:D:D

The beverage idea sounds good.

9 miles to work. If I make all the lights about 15 minutes and I'm not stuck behind someone do 25 in the 35 zone.

Toughest commute for me was when we lived in the DC area. I car pooled with 3 other guys and the express lanes got us into work around 6am each morning before the "REAL TRAFFIC HIT THE FAN" so to speak. BUT GETTING UP EVERY MORNING AT 4:00AM; well that about did me in. Glad to be past all that.

There are just too many things to say positive about retirement. It's all about quality of life. Best to all of you in your decisions.

Summer is officially here. Astrology wise not yet, meteorology wise yes and over 100F on some days yes. So how do I know? SO has dragged the portable evaporative cooler out from it’s covers and placed it just so. Didn’t plug it in or put water in it, just left it just so. I took the hint and added electricity and water and waited patiently to see if the pump would prime itself and start pumping. Success. Now I just need to concentrate on keeping the water tank from getting empty. Maybe I should look for one that has a self filling tank.

What good does this device do here on the patio in the desert? It blows cooler air on the person who demands that and sits immediately in front of it. Other than that it does no more good than the ceiling fan installed on the patio years ago.

I try to remember to check the water level each night before retiring and caution that it must be turned off. I tried asking for unplugging but not gonna happen.

I remember this tale and the photos involved. http://www.tsptalk.com/mb/the-lounge/19991-patio-post473853.html#post473853. This link is not working. It is on page 8 of the patio.

Where is Buster? I hope he is as well as can be. Haven’t seen a post this calendar year.

Paranoia Division, Foil Hat Brigade report. I was sitting on my patio minding my own business as a private citizen when my wifi went down and the wireless phones showed they had lost touch with the base station. At that time a flight of four black helicopters came in to sight. Well they were actually dark green but they were blackhawks. They went behind a tree and never reappeared. At least from my line of sight. I went looking for my foil hat but the SO had apparently recycled it again. I had to log in to the wifi again. Just a heads up.

I think this makes post 2004 and while I thank you for the recognition that will make 1915 that were drivel, 65 that whined about not knowing how to invest and 20 or so that provided information someone already knew.

And we're enjoying the 4th day of +110 degree weather. Thanks for the tip on the tin foil and WiFi. I'll keep looking up in the night sky.

I went out and played 9 holes this morning. it wasn't bad. Just had to drink a lot....beer that is...really helped with my concentration.

Buster emails me once in a while. I don't know the whole story but he felt like he was being dissed by a couple of folks. I miss his post. Buster, if you can hear me, and PO, please re insert yourself back into our happy place. We need you. Happy Father's Day to all. Bill from MS or Tiger25.

Yeah I wish Old Buster would come back, we were friends for many years.

Good afternoon/evening all. Sitting here on my patio reading the MB. Chores I chose to do are done.

Took AL today, spreading it out over the year. It has been pretty cool so far. With my AWS of 4/10s it means 3 days on, 4 off every few weeks. I could get used to this.

Better not, next year there are vacation excursions planned.

FWIW, there have been just as many comments made about this method of using use/lose AL as taking it in larger chunks. Why is it managers demand you schedule AL early (not too bad for me, 31 Mar) and then make noises like you are a lazy malingering loafer when you take it?

Rhetorical question.

There are a couple of ancient arguments going on in the * forums. Mostly a rerun but still mildly interesting.

One snippet from one place ”…the state can provide full employment even if workers are not doing anything particularly essential…” amuses me. I look at the time of the postings, adjust for my local time and the time zone of the poster and it is interesting who posts at what could reasonably be considered before or after work or at lunch time and who posts when they reasonably would be thought to be working. Nothing I haven’t commented on before.

I got a few CYA letters attached to a CYA e-mail at work today about the ever expanding data breach. I may or may not post some of them in the appropriate thread. Why am I checking work e-mails while on AL? Why do some of you post on this MB while at work?

There is a new thread in the politics forum that needs an *in the title. I suspect the OP knew that but may be too suspicious.

Based on everything going on with actual work, personnel issues concerning work, neighborhood, house and home; I have one comment.

AAAARRRRRRGGGGHHHHH. Needed to say it somewhere and NOT vocalize it.

Thanks.

Happy weekend to all.

PO - Take that train/road trip you've been dreaming about....life is short. All your problems will probably still be there when you get back, but at least when the stress levels get high you can reflect back on a great adventure.

Aloha ✌🏼
