Tax Cuts

Retreading old ground, but every time I hear someone mention the Green Mountain State and politics, I remember a line from one of Bing Crosby's movies where he says to Danny Kaye (IIRC) "where ya gonna find a democrat in Vermont?". That was in the 1930s. My, how times change.

Now which one of these snow drifts contains my Subaru?

PO

you guys are missing a goldmine in your own back yards.

with the whole PII thing every office should have one of those cross-cut shredders by now, you know the kind that shave it into tiny unrecognizable bits?

so save the custodial crew a bit of work and take a bag or two home with you, big cost savings for the gubmint on landfill fees. then do it again.

dump it in your attic, it is the same as blown-in paper insulation, c'mon get green, reduce reuse recycle.
Illegal Burr..the paper shreds are not fire retarded....Good idea though for a worm bed;)

Burro, Burro, Burro

This would be cutting out a whole sector of middle men and would be stealing from the government for personal gain.

Tsk, tsk.

Besides, this stuff burns really easily, based on my experiences trying to thouroughly destroy microfiche mixed with paper. BTW a microfiche run through a cross cut shredder can still be put back together by "them" and read.

Anyone still use microfiche? Anyone know what they are?

Seriously, it is a good idea but the shreds should be treated with something so they won't burn quite so ferociously.

i believe the correct term is 'flammably challenged' these days.

besides, that's what fire insurance is for. if it all burns up how they gonna know?

They have just now started the roll call for the tax cut cloture vote. I'm watching it on CSPAN- no vote tally yet.

Question #1: Who wrote the law that made the tax cuts expire at midnight, December 31, 2010?
Answer: Republicans. (Public Law 108-27, Dick Cheney broke the 50/50 tie back in 2003).
The sunset clause was a Democrat addition in compromise.

Question #2: Who voted AGAINST renewing the tax cuts for the middle class Americans, in vote number 259 (Tax rates continued for everyone below ONE MILLION DOLLARS in earned income)
Answer: Republicans. Dems have a super majority. If they had wanted it passed, they could have passed it.

AND

Question #3 Who voted AGAINST renewing the tax cuts for the middle class Americans in vote number 258 (Tax rates continues for everyone below $250,000 per year in earned income)? Dems have a super majority. If they had wanted it passed, they could have passed it.

Answer: Republicans.

Look no further than the elephants for your criminal behavior against the American people.

Yes= the people will know who is responsible for allowing the tax rates for the middle class to go up. It's those people who refused to compromise on the richest 1% of Americans who is responsible for ALL taxes going up.
Do the Democrats take any responsibility for the things that they aren't successful in passing, considering they run the House, the Senate, and the White House?

No, that is not correct. It ended after ten years because it was passed as part of a "reconcillation bill", which has a maximum life of 10 years. There was absolutely no compromises for Dems in that bill, it was ramrodded through without support from Dems, and without any compromises being made.

That's not true. Dems do not have "a super majority". They have 57 votes. It takes 60 votes under current Senate rules to bring anything to the floor for "cloture", which is cutting off debate and setting a fixed time debate to end. Dems do not have the power now to do that without 3 votes from others.

Again, you are wrong. That's not true. Dems do not have "a super majority". They have 57 votes. It takes 60 votes under current Senate rules to bring anything to the floor for "cloture", which is cutting off debate and setting a fixed time debate to end. Dems do not have the power now to do that without 3 votes from others. In this vote, the Dems had 53 votes in favor, and 4 votes against. Even if they had all 57 Dems in favor, that's not enough to pass. They would need three additional votes to pass it, and they didn't .

I seriously have to ask- have you missed the whole thing for the last two years of the republicans blocking every time the democrats tried to bring legislation up for a vote? The republicans blocked and blocked, and prevented votes in the Senate time after time.

They may "run" the Senate, but unless they can gather three votes BESIDES the 57 democratic votes in order to bring something to the floor, they are dead in the water and cannot move anything forward.

Did you miss all that Viva?

Tax bill cloture vote passes- 62 to 7 as of now. They still have the vote open to allow anyone to cast a vote who hasn't yet, but there are enough votes already to invoke cloture and bring it to the floor for debate and a vote.

Independents were caucusing with the Dems, therefore the Dems had a super majority.

Please help me out- which ones do you think combine to make 60 votes?

Perhaps I am missing something. I was already counting Bernie Sanders of Vermont (Independent) and Joe Liberman (Independent) in my count of 57 votes.

Where are three more democratic votes to make a super majority of 60? I see at least 42 republicans up there.

Update on the vote count. It's now 69 votes in favor of cloture, just 10 voting against.

the vote count is being held open to allow Senators to return and vote- some are still delayed by weather.

The ten voting against cloture are:

Bingaman (D-NM), Leahy (D-VT), Udall (D-Co) Finegold (D-Wi), Sanders, (I-VT) Levin (D-MI), Gilibrand (D-NY), Brown (D-OH), Ensign (R-NV), Hagan (D-NC).

Until Ted Kennedy died, the Dems had a super majority. 58 Dems, 2 Indys. Why didn't they look to secure the middle class tax cuts then? The answer is simple, they wanted to raise taxes on all income classes.

Besides, you have Harry Reid listed as a nay. Last I checked he was the Senate Majority Leader and is a Democrat.

NO- they were busy doing Health Care reform, and other assorted issues. Reaching out and making compromises to the republicans at almost every turn, trying to be bipartisan. They didn't "secure middle class tax cuts then" because there were other, higher priority issues then. Health Care- you remember that? Health Care reform took up a huge amount of time and compromises.

And there were a lot of other, more important things at the time... http://whatthefuckhasobamadonesofar.com/

We aren't going to agree on whether Health Care Reform was a priority. Personally, I think it was a waste of time that will not improve health care and ignored the will of the People.

I couldn't open the link you provided here at work, so I can't address anything contained therein.
