Silverbird's Account Talk

Is GDP An Obsolete Measure of Progress?
[I'm not a fan of Time Magazine, but a good overview of the problems with GDP here]
"....Since it became the prime economic indicator during the Second World War (to monitor war production) many have criticized policy-makers' reliance on the GDP — and proposed substitute measures...."

[Genuine Progress Indicator? Human Development Index? Happy Planet Index??? I just can't see these catching on?:toung: But seriously, always know what you are mesuring - even if the data is pristine (good luck!) if you aren't measuring the right thing, you won't get anything usable out the other end.]

But seriously, always know what you are measuring...]

Oooh Silverbird,
How come I always enjoy your posts so much ??

Huh ? Can you tell me that?:toung:

The GDP is like the 'ultimate measurement' to determine just how BAD our National Debt really is.

Now this is probably too much for any person to honestly be able to appreciate because it is so much Bigger than anything we've ever known.

But what if our National Debt was 70% or greater of our GDP ;)

Your signiture says it pretty well

That's the first thing that popped in my head when I found out about that economist that won a prize :suspicious: for developing a financial model that was predicated on real estate prices always going up. ..ooOO(D'oh!) I don't know who is more a fool, the developer or the bankers that used it.

The computer version was the first one for this adage - garbage in, garbage out. Except the input isn't always garbage, sometimes it's the program.

 Yiiipppeeee, still holding on for the long term. But Steady, I think you are ahead in the abundance factor, unless you are falling faster down the autotracker.

If you let go, that's the loss you take, so I can't do that.

WOW !! Thank you, I really appreciate it.

Dear one, the AT has hugely dominated too much of my thoughts and equally devastating has been this minute by minute watching the Charts -- and catching up on all the hype.

Please don't misunderstand me -- when I say Hype -- I stickly mean the way I get so emotionally attached (and overwhelmed) by the Doom and Gloom when it looks like the world is coming to an end.

Most of the Members I pay attention are very solidly grounded and most certainly know their stuff ~~ but I've simply decided that no one can predict the Markets with Certainty and ....

...'Trying to catch a bounce .....will bounce you on your head' ;)

Sooo thank you .. but I'm ignoring the crap and trying to put the emotions (and my position on the AT) aside.

In the end we may have to downsize to a 6 bedroom - 4 bathroom mansion with gold plated chandilers (instead of pure gold) - but we'll still have the big room that is odor proof; sound proof; and shielded with lead.

At this point we're still ahead enough to add the secret elevator that takes us to the rest of the stuff we planned.

Thanks for the encouragement -- but I'm ignoring the day to day -- and I'm with you -- the moment you bail -- it's too late.:cool:

 Send this snow to Vancouver, Kthanks (they have less than half of last year and have the Olympics coming up)!

ARRGH! Two storms having a little get together in DC again! This is usually a *summer* weather pattern.

Sig other broke a shovel on the snow. Beginning to look worriedly at the trees with more snow and big winds! Some may think gridlock is good, but wait till you see the cleanup and salary for non-work time bills. Bird caged up and rather ornery.

Sig other broke a shovel on the snow.

I've got 5 admissions that need worked up -- so only have a minute but let me help ya out real quick here sugar pie.

OK - So you just go over and give him one of those looks that unmistakenly tell him --- WTF are you doing ???

Then of couse he's going to say "WHAT" ??

That's the time -- really lay into him. ;) Who the hell works around the clock to get all the bills paid  and got stuck with this BS plan where I have to do anything even remotely related to something getting torn up inside the house. Here you do a quick pacing and kind of act like you're about to go nuts -- then remind him of the 22 layers of tile that had to come up -- the washing machine parts -- and how you didn't STOP - but had to keep going.

OK Silverbird -- don't give him much time -- just enough to absorb what you just said....:)

Then end it by saying -- 'You get your ass out there and get another shovel and clear that stuff off the walk' ...

...then you have to walk away ... 'Flustered' .... before he can try to calm you.

After he leaves to get another shovel -- come back and we'll all celebrate together.

Beginning to look worriedly at the trees with more snow and big winds!

Wow -- I feel for ya -- seriously -- ENOUGH ALREADY

Some may think gridlock is good,

Only Phil, Buster, and Show-me think that -- NO ONE ELSE

but wait till you see the cleanup and salary for non-work time bills.

Bird caged up and rather ornery.

Well being 'ornery' will be perfect for the plan above !!!

GL -- and play it up -- I mean have him running to the store :D

My Wife is getting the Blues from being Home so much also Silverbird. We got out this morning to get gas and some Boot Waterproofer at the mall and my wife didn't want to leave.

I've got a bunch of my trees that are down near the road that have lost some pretty big branches and some of the branches are being held up by the power lines. I called Novec (Electric Company) 2 day's ago and could not get a hold of anyone so I left a voice mail stating my concern and Nobody has come to even look at the situation.

It's pretty hard for me to comprehend another 18" of snow -- on top of a previous huge strom. WOW !!

'Feeling cooped up' would get old fast :(

Hope things are better Little bird :worried: ... been missin' ya.

SB, Vancouver (and here) would be happy to take some of your snow. It was forecasted to be a dry winter here and is. There'll be a big fire season coming next summer if we don't get more snow in Feb/March (tho we usually do-eventually). :suspicious: I lived through the summer 2-storm shindigs NVa growing up, so know what you're talking about there. Hang tight, we feel for you. Hope some of Steady's sunshine peeps through the clouds for a day or two, that would help brighten the mood, at least it would for me.

Bird scritches head. What is going on here? Crazy market.
I'll take the little uptick if it stays, of course.

Gosh -- just 1 lousey % -- makes us different ;) when I'm looking for things in common.

Then I think .... hummm.... everyone's DNA is also 99.99% identical and all of a sudden I see light years of differences ...

But all the same -- I glad the snow finally melted and life is hopefully back to normal.
