As we move into the back half of September, the AutoTracker leaderboard shows a clear divide between the month’s strongest performers and the broader group of active members.

Twenty-five members have managed returns of 2.5% or better so far. Nearly all of them are leaning heavily on stocks, with the I-fund in particular standing out. On average, this top-performing group holds just 8% in the G-fund compared to more than half of their allocations in the I-fund. That is from only two of the 25 who are sitting entirely in the G-fund..

That contrasts sharply with the bigger picture. Among all 576 active members, more than a third of TSP balances remain parked in the G-fund, and allocations are spread more evenly across the C and S-funds.

The Average Allocation of the Top 25 September Returns:

G-fund: 8.0%, F-fund: 1.0%, C-fund: 17.6%, S-fund: 7.0%, I-fund: 51.2%

The Average Allocation of all active members (576)*:

G-fund: 35.7%, F-fund: 2.0%, C-fund: 22.5%, S-fund: 29.2%, I-fund: 6.1%

The story of September so far has been one of reward for those willing to take on risk and show little fear against the already lofty market prices. Stockholders, and especially those with international exposure, are leading the way. Few of the top performers are protecting their gains just yet, while the majority of active members continue to keep a cautious stance. In total, 123 members have made at least one IFT this month.

*Active members are those who log in often enough that we can reasonably assume their allocations match their actual TSP accounts.
