Suddenly it’s RMD time for me. Yeah shoulda started converting some of TSP to Roth years ago but…

The TSP site tells me they will automatically send the first year’s RMD on 31 Mar 26. Not good for the 2026 tax year so I will withdraw at least that amount in November or December.

Just a heads up for anyone who turned 73 this year.

Fortunately IRMAA will not come in to play for income or Medicare. Won’t increase the tax on SS. But the MRA only get’s higher in future years.

2025 MRA is all ready cast in stone. 2026 will be based on the balance 31 Dec 2025.

Think I should start converting some of the money to a Roth? MRA will have to be paid first in any case. Converting to Roth should decrease the EOY balance. Taxes have to be paid in any case.

Hopefully my financial advisor is taking care of it. Although I'm not in TSP anymore. Moved everything into my personal account late last year.
How you been doing?

Fuzzy math here, but I think my dad is getting close to his first RMD, and due to both his birthday and where it falls, I think he may have to do 2 RMDs his first year?

The TSP will automatically send the first year RMD in March of the year the owner turns 74. You can avoid this by withdrawing at least the RMD amount by 31 Dec in the year the owner turns 73.

Anyone recently make a one time partial withdrawal and if so how long did it take for the transaction to take place in your TSP account?

I did one last month. Your spouse - if any - has to agree to it via an email that comes pretty much instantly once you request it. After that it takes about 3 business days if you get your funds via direct deposit. One word of caution - the bank account you direct deposit to has to be on record on your TSP account for a week (or 7 business days, I'm not sure) before you can send a DD to it.
