Question: When those rigs all take off to destinations unknown, what happens to the tubes & shafts where the drilling ooccurs? My mind's eye seems to think that oil should be spewing up and out, but obviously that is not how this works. I gather the morrings are all still intact?
not sure what safeguards are in place.....looks like crude spilling next to the typhoon rig.

**probably better shut off systems on the newer platforms.

U.S. Henry Hub nat gas pipeline has leak-governor

Sat Sep 24, 2005 10:00 PM ET

SINGAPORE, Sept 25 (Reuters) - The gas pipeline that links to the Henry Hub delivery point for U.S. natural gas contracts has a leak due to damage sustained from Hurricane Rita, the governor of Louisiana said on Sunday.

"We understand there is a gas leak and ... a possible shearing of an oil storage tank," Gov. Kathleen Blanco told CNN television channel in the United States.

She did not give any further details as to the extent of the damage but said they would need to plug the leak or flare the gas as it presented a danger.

Sabine Pipeline LLC, a unit of Chevron (CVX.N) , which owns and operates the Henry Hub, did not immediately return phone calls.

The New York Mercantile Exchange on Friday declared force majeure on remaining September natural gas deliveries due to the closure of the Sabine Pipeline, which operates the key Henry Hub delivery point in Erath, Louisiana.

On Thursday, Sabine shut down its pipeline ahead of Hurricane Rita's expected landfall along the U.S. Gulf Coast and declared force majeure, the exchange said in a statement.

Offshore Drillings Rigs in Path of Rita

Offshore Platforms in Path of Rita

West Cameron, situated south of Lake Charles, LA to the TX-LA border, is likely to be one of the areas hardest hit by Rita and will most likely see some of the worst damage to its offshore installations. This area is one of the most most actively producing and explored areas in the Gulf of Mexico. It has the third highest number of unmanned offshore platforms and the fifth highest number of manned platforms of any area in the GOM, with a total of 292 unmanned and 88 manned platforms. Additionally, there are a total of 22 mobile offshore drilling rigs in the West Cameron area, including 19 jackups, 2 submersibles, and 1 platform rig. Of those rigs, 10 of them are owned and managed by TODCO, The Offshore Drilling Company, which is the rig manager with the most rigs facing possible damage from Rita.

In Tyler County in eastern Texas, high winds ripped roofs off several buildings, including the police department in Woodville, sheriff's Chief Deputy Clint Sturrock said.
The junior high school in nearby Warren also lost its roof, and fire _ likely triggered by lightning _ broke out in a pile of logs. "We just let it burn," Sturrock said.

Rita Hits Near Civil War Battleground

The Associated Press
Saturday, September 24, 2005; 7:54 AM

-- Hurricane Rita came ashore Saturday just east of Sabine Pass, Texas, home to a Civil War battleground and a town that was nearly destroyed by a hurricane over a century ago.

In 1886, a hurricane destroyed much of the town of Sabine Pass, killing 86 people. Major storms hit again in 1900 and 1915.

Sabine Pass was annexed by Port Arthur in 1978, and about 1,500 people lived in the community in the early 1980s.

The Sabine Pass Battleground State Park & Historic Site commemorates a battle in 1863, when the U.S. Navy tried to invade Confederate Texas. The Navy wanted access to the rail center of Houston, but was stopped by Lt. Dick Dowling of the Confederate Army and 46 of his men, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Web site.

Sabine Pass also is the birthplace of J.P. Richardson Jr., "The Big Bopper," who died in a plane crash along with Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens in 1959. Two years earlier, he recorded his most famous song, "Chantilly Lace."

Has anyone heard what started the fires in Galveston?
One building was nearly destroyed, the others appeared heavily damaged. A burning electric pole was lying on one of the buildings. City manager Steve LeBlanc said the fire could have been caused by downed power lines. Power was out throughout most of the city.
