Retirement Processing Time

Just wanted to post a quick note about how long my application took to finalize.
I retired on 28 Nov 2014.

OPM recd. the package from DFAS 9 Dec 2014 (also the date I recd. my last pay check with the annual leave payout).
Placed in Interim Pay Status 12 Dec 2014
Assigned to a retirement specialist 9 Jan 2015
Case finalized 19 Jan 2015.

This time to process may not be typical as mine was a simple application. (34 years, Two agencies, no break in service and 4 yrs. military buy back).

Nov is not a month with thousands of applications, so I probably got in before the backlog of apps from January occurred.

This is my time line, hope yours is a quick and painless as mine.

Oh, one more thing, I never spoke to OPM, I just watched the progress on the OPM Services Web Site.

Thank for the timeline information. May I ask how much lead time or notice that you gave OPM as to your desire to retire? Is there an optimal amount of time to give them a heads up as to when you desire to retire?

Forgive my novice questions but, I've never "retired" before.

I submitted my application to my agency in July 2014. Most agencies will allow you to submit 4-5 months out. OPM will not get the application till after your retirement date. I suggest submitting to your agency about 4 months out, as they will (should) look at the application and advise of any mistakes or omissions on your application. Buy back time (Military or other) as soon as possible, don't be trying to do that during the retirement process, it will cause ulcers.
