RE: Reinvesting dividends & capital gains

My individual account is small so any dividends payed (< $5) will be too small to reinvest. My account has an automatic reinvest option for dividends & capital gains, and is by default set to "yes" on both.
ING has a "money market" account that acts as your to/from account for electronic transfers with your regular financial institution.
If the dividends are too small to make x1 share purchase, should they automatically go to money market account?
Because the dividends will be too small, should I set the auto-investing thing to "no" before they are payed out?
If the dividends happened to be large enough for reinvestment, and by having the auto-reinvest thing set to "yes", would I then be also paying a trade fee upon the reinvestment?

Any opinions are helpful here. I didnt see live support on their site, and would hate to try to email their "support" for this (my experience, the reply usually doesnt answer the question).

Re: Reinvesting dividends & capital gains

Dividend reinvestments are commission free and will usually purchase fractional shares also. You're on the right track. The dividend income will add up fast over time. Dividend reinvestment is very similar to dollar cost averaging - just let market fate lead the way. Mutual funds only reinvest once per year, where stocks will reinvest four times a year. I have about 75 dividend payments due in December.

Agree with Birch, the "reinvest" option will purchase a share on a fractional basis with no fees. If you "collect" these small dividends in order to purchase shares of something else, or even the same investment at a lower price, the fees involved may negate the practicality of this with small dividend amounts...........

FWIW
My wife ML account is set up to reinvest all dividends into cash preservation. She had been doing it that way for over 10 years.
The good news was when the market crashed (08) She had mad cash to invest at incredible prices but that is not the norm.
