Post Your "12-Month Personal Rate of Return"

"are contributions considered an increase since the beginning of the year?"

Your entire balance (contributions over the month and earnings/loses) is used for the 12-month PPR.

This makes it even more confusing.

Contributions for the month?

Honestly this number has never made any sense to me...it seems most people are making 20-30%/year and some up to 50? This, in my opinion, is too good to be true. It would be nice if the TSP site included a little explanation of the calculations used. I'm sure there is an explanation buried in here somewhere but I still fault the TSP for not providing an obvous explanation on the webpage

Your Personal Investment Performance (PIP) for the past 12 months ending 07/31/2011 is 23.12%.

Now I have a question, how do contributions affect this number? Do they only count increase in funds deposited, or are contributions considered an increase since the beginning of the year?

TSP states that they compute the PIP with the Modified Dietz Method which is a time weighted performance estimate. See link below for an explanation of how this is done.
http://www.ipcc.ca/files/rate_of_return/Modified_Dietz_ROR.pdf Good luck with that one!

"They require all the transactional history as well as price history since the
beginning of the account."

They use contributions and price history to calculate monthly PIP, then use monthly PIP to get 12-month PIP.

It's actually the best number as your contributions can greatly affect the return % especially in the first 10 years as the account builds up.

Thanks Scout333!

Thanks, that makes sense. I have to think a little about the method for linking months but I'm sure it's a standard finance approach (not a native field to me) and it works out right. Appears I did not look closely enough at the site.

For me :)
"Your Personal Investment Performance (PIP) for the past 12 months ending 07/31/2011 is 21.54%"

Not looking forward to next months!

So if I'm doing the oppisite, withdrawing 5% and my PIP is 8%. I made 13%?:)

There were big gains in 2009/2010 which is part of the reason many people are reporting big PIP numbers. If somebody jumped 50% I would think this would be someone who is a really savvy investor or someone who just started their job at the right time.

Your Personal Investment Performance (PIP) for the past 12 months ending 08/31/2011 is 8.04%.
(Your PIP is posted by the 3rd business day of each month.)

Not bad when I'm drawing 5%.:)
