Post the top 10

I am not good enough to have my own thread. However, of those that are and post their moves like you do, perhaps rate them. From top to bottom. What I am trying to say is put the top performers on the top of the thread page. Not all of the people just say the top 10 get a special slot. The slot is changed once a year. So who ever did the best for the year gets one of the 10 best positions. They have to have their moves posted the way you do. This way we will have some of us who are doing good have a place to post results we can find. This is not to say someone who did good one year will continue to do well. Just a way to get a feel for how those that are doing good think.
 
I think that's a GREAT idea!!! Might make it for the highest returns for the MONTH!! More up to date, some do well one year and poorly the next! Just a suggestion.:rolleyes:
 
The 2005 tally is below. Looks like only 12 people qualified for a yearly total. The Tally-men can tell us why. Probably because of invalid allocation changes, inactivity, etc. All 12 beat the S&P 500 but I'm not sure we have a good total. Anyway, I hate to leave anyone out but I'll list the 12 who beat the S&P 500 in 2005. Perhaps at the end of each quarter or 6 months in 2006 we can update it since the data is so limited for 2005.

If someone doesn't show a yearly total, it's because they didn't start posting at the beginning of the year.
 
Here is a suggestion:

First, about getting "tracked". I suggest you put up a paypal link specifically for the option of being "tracked", and make it a small donation- perhaps something like $12 (a dollar a month) for the right to be tracked and "compete" in the tracking. You are tracking a lot of people now, and by putting just a small donation figure assocaited with it, you would at least thin the heard a little. I know I would pay no more than perhaps $25 to be "tracked", and the lower the better. Or, for that matter, make it $5 a quarter, with a prize for the top quarterly finisher, and the top three of the year. And the prize can be something small, but still cool. (I LOVE my TSPTALK mug).

2. On the "members allocations and returns" page, currenlty some people are voted as threads wtih "stars". For example, I am listed now with three stars. My suggestion would be if the person is a current top ten performer, then give them 5 stars, so that people can quickly see if they are the ones with high performing account moves. If they are in the middle of the pack, then they get three stars, and if they are in the bottom ten people, they only get one star. Results are based on either quarterlty performance, or year to date performance, and everything starts fresh in January.

those are my two suggestions for consideration.

James I'd suggest something other than the start fresh in January idea. The reason the request was made was to make it easier to find out when some of the top performers are moving. Makes sense. If we started over in January you'd loose that till more results were in. I'd suggest using the previous 12 months as the standard and change it every quarter. It could be changed monthly but that would just add work.

I had suggested that small fee ($10 or $12/yr) to help out whoever is doing the work, in this case it is EWGuy, but many just said they wouldn't do it. I didn't look at it so much as a fee but rather a donation. It was a way to weed out the folks who are serious versus someone who stops in, gives there allocation, then disappears for a few months. But because of the reaction, I decided to set up the tracker page (www.tsptalk.com/tsp_tracker.html) and it allows EWGuy to get the revenue generated from the ads on that page. I don't think it is generating much but it's a start.

If the tracker gets too big and the ads are doing little for EWGuy, we may have to make a change. I don't want to beat this to death because we went through this pretty thoroughly a few months ago (I can't find the thread - somewhere in here perhaps... http://www.tsptalk.com/mb/forumdisplay.php?f=57) but I'm open to new suggestions.

Bottom line is, I don't want to discourage people from getting on the tracker, but if it is going to be a free service, I would prefer that they were active board members rather than hit and runners. Otherwise we may implement the small fee to discourage them.

Unfortunately that is a feature of the vbulletin message board software and not something I have much control over.

In Market Talk I already track the leaders in a average allocation. And their percentage of being bullish or bearish.

I don't know just who should be tracked, top 5, top 10, add in some of the new members....this I don't know!

I would like to know their ages. Curious to find out how different age groups play the funds.

Then again if we have too many indicators we risk being paralyzed by analysis.
 
How about this idea to consider then-

One tracker tracking "proven performers", i.e. someone who finished in the top half of the previous quarter, (OR PREVIOUS YEAR), and a seperate tracker as a "qualifier round" tracker, for newbies that enter and want to compete.

You could view either one.


But in order to be in the "big game", you have to prove youself first as a savy competitor in a full quarter, or full year, before being allowed to compete on the same tracker chart as the successful guys...(and gals)..

Just an idea for consideration.

Now is the time to talk about anything we might like to do differently, before the start of the new year.

I support this idea. I have no idea what the stars mean right now because there doesn't appear to be a consistent relationship between number of stars and either performance, longevity or significant contribution to the board. It seems more subjective than objective. My modification of this idea would be that stars are "earned." I don't want people in the "bottom 10" getting even one star for that, although perhaps a star might be "earned" for longevity? I'm not sure how far you want to take this, but ideally one could look at a post from a particular user and know immediately if that person were "top 10" or top 1/3, if they were new (less than a year?) or a veteran, aggressive or conservative, erratic or consistant, and of course during this holiday season, naughty or nice. How many lists would this take, and how many times would they have to be checked?

If you could just tell me who's got the red nose, I'll follow him or her.

The problem is that right now, the way one gets "stars" is when someone else rates the message or thread as "one to five stars". Anyone can give a rating to anyone else. If one person gives them a one star rating, and someone else gives them a five star rating, it averages out to three stars and that is what is displayed.

We'd have to do a posting of the rules, and create a rule that said on that board (the one for allocations), that ONLY a moderator can give someone stars. And then the moderator watch who is performing, and who is getting too many stars, or not enough, so that others could come in a vote star tehm up or down, as needed.

Just an idea.

Do you mean the spreadsheets that Rokid and I produce or are you talking about a deparate message thread?

I don't think a separate sheet with the leaders adds anything. Rokid's is sorted top to lowest and I typically post the top ten leaders in several categories.

I do think creating a separate thread where just the top (quarter?, 10?, whatever) can post there moves would cut down on the time required to find their moves. Of course all you have to do is subscribe to those threads and you can find them easily or even have post e-mailed.

What I meant was that the master excel spreadsheet, which is now up to almost 10 megabites, is a bit big, and contains everybody in it. Is is a bit wiedly to try and move around within.

Perhaps a seperate excel spreadsheet for the newbies to "qualify," in order to get rewarded- allowed to play with the expereincd people. You could require someone to place in the top 50% on the newbie tracker, to be able to move foward to the main tracker. the other thing that does is keep someone with only a partial quarter from appearing within the main tracker- potentially skewing the results. For example, if someone started right after a significant downturn (like May was this year), would not have the same type of return as someone in longer.

Anyway- it is just an idea for discussion purposes, nothing more.

By the way- the Rokid tracker sheet is my best tool! I like it- it has top to bottom, and is consolidated with all the right info. It's super!

I print it out each week, look where I came out, look at what those above me did, and watch them to see what they are doing, and why. That has helped me greatly, much better than trying to sort through it all in the master excel spreadsheet that has everyone and is now 10 megs. The rokid sheets themselves are like gold to me, so thank you ever so much for doing them.
