Oil tumbles for third day in a row

Few expect sharp sell-off on tensions in Iran, Nigeria; mild weather in Northeast cuts into demand.

February 21 2007: 6:06 AM EST

LONDON (Reuters) -- Oil slid for a third day Wednesday but remained in a narrow trading range below $60 a barrel with little impetus to break out in either direction.
"Prices are stuck in a three-week range but capped below key resistance. We [expect] to see further downside price moves, although in the near-term, we are resigned to sideways activity," said Barclays Capital technical analysts, who study past price moves to predict future direction.

TOKYO (Reuters) -- Oil prices slipped below $60 a barrel on Thursday ahead of numbers expected to show that winter demand cut heating fuel inventories in the United States, the world's biggest energy consumer.
U.S. crude for April delivery fell 35 cents at $59.72 a barrel in electronic trading, after gaining $1.22 on Wednesday. London Brent crude for April lost 21 cents to $59.14.

Crude dips as weather outweighs Iran tension
Refinery glitches, weekly data on supplies are also in focus

Last Update: 8:39 AM ET Feb 22, 2007

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Crude-oil futures were slightly lower early Thursday as warmer temperatures in the northeastern U.S. weighed against tensions surrounding Iran and its nuclear program and a series of refinery glitches that have propped up gasoline prices in recent sessions.

Other energy futures were flat as traders await the release at 10.30 a.m. of weekly data on supplies of oil and its products. The data is being released a day later than usual because of the Presidents Day holiday. Data on natural gas in storage will also be released.
The data is expected to show whether the recent bitterly cold spell in the Northeast, the region that consumes the most heating oil in the U.S., has had a real impact on what are unusually high inventories following a mostly mild winter.
Crude for April delivery was down 35 cents at $59.72 a barrel. On Wednesday, the contract closed above $60 a barrel, a level it has found hard to hold since the start of the year.
"Supply concerns resulting from refinery and pipeline problems in Texas and Iran announcing plans to continue with its nuclear program (ignoring a U.N. deadline for a freeze on enrichment) led to the upward momentum," said Kurt Hallead, analyst at RBC Capital Markets in a note. (more)

Oil and Iran misbehaving is taking the sugar off of the market cookie today, who's idea was this?

11:00 am : More of the same for stocks as the Dow and Nasdaq continue to trade in opposing directions. Market breadth now exhibits a slightly bearish bias as oil prices spiking to session highs underpin a sense of nervousness.

Crude extends rally following bullish supply data

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Crude-oil futures extended their rally early Friday in a continued response to data showing a far bigger-than-expected decline in heating fuel during last week's bitterly cold snap, reducing what have been unusually high stockpiles following a mild winter.
