It is no secret that the oil and gas industry has (and will continue to have) a propensity for job creation. Domestically, look no further than the top-five drilling states for validation. Texas, Oklahoma, North Dakota, Louisiana, and Pennsylvania (in order of largest to smallest number of rigs in each state) currently control nearly 80 percent of all land drilling in the United States. All of these states have unemployment rates that are well below the national average of 9.1 percent. Combined unemployment of the five states, for the most recent month averaged 6.6 percent.

Some things have changed.
The number of hands in the till hasn't changed, much. ;) The "ME" percentage has probably gotten smaller. The price of gas didn't change on a near daily basis back then. But I think the BIGGEST difference between then and now you can't by fishing worms at most gas stations. :D

Kinder Morgan to Purchase El Paso for Approximately $38 Billion

"This once in a lifetime transaction is a win-win opportunity for both companies," said Kinder Morgan Chairman and CEO Richard D. Kinder. "The El Paso assets are primarily regulated interstate natural gas pipelines that produce substantial, stable cash flow and have access to key supply regions and major consuming markets. The natural gas pipeline systems of the two companies are very complementary, as they primarily serve different supply sources and markets in the United States. The transaction is expected to produce immediate shareholder value (upon closing) through strong cash flow accretion and offers significant future growth opportunities."
