NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Crude-oil futures fell early Wednesday as traders continued to unwind the safe-haven positions built around the violence in the Middle East and looked toward weekly data for clues to the state of supplies and demand.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Crude-oil futures rose early Thursday, recouping part of their prior-day loss as traders continued to react to weekly supply data and keep a cautious eye on the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
Crude for August delivery was last up 46 cents at $73.12 a barrel in electronic trade.

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Crude-oil futures headed higher Thursday, after tallying a three-session loss of almost 6%, as escalating violence in the Middle East fed concern about global production.
Given the current high anxiety level, "sharp moves in both directions [for prices] can be expected," said Michael Fitzpatrick, an analyst at Fimat USA.

Oil turns higher on Mideast tensions
Investors concerned about wider conflict, production problems in U.S.

LONDON (Reuters) -- Oil prices turned higher Friday after backsliding from record highs, after Israel's army was reported calling up reservists in the conflict with Lebanon.
The report was carried by the Israeli YNET news Web site as speculation grew Israel may be preparing for a ground invasion of Lebanon.

Oil rises as Israel calls up reservists
NEW YORK - Oil held above $74 a barrel on Friday on concerns about escalating violence in the Middle East after Israel called up reservists in what could be a ground offensive against Hezbollah guerrillas. Israel ordered several thousand reserve soldiers to report for duty as signs grew that the army may be preparing for an invasion of southern Lebanon.

U.S. Weekly Oil and Gas Rig Count Up 15
HOUSTON - The number of rigs actively exploring for oil and natural gas in the United States this week rose by 15 to 1,683. Of the rigs running nationwide, 1,381 were exploring for gas and 299 for oil, Houston-based Baker Hughes Inc. reported Friday. Three were listed as miscellaneous. A year ago, the rig count was 1,410. Of the major oil- and gas-producing states, Texas gained 17 rigs, California and New Mexico each gained two and Oklahoma gained one. Colorado lost four rigs, Wyoming lost three and Louisiana lost one. The number of rigs in Alaska was unchanged.

Crude eases on hopes for Mideast solution

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Crude-oil futures eased early Monday on hopes diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict between Israel and Lebanon will succeed before the violence spreads to any other countries in the region.
Crude for September delivery was last trading down 71 cents at $73.72 a barrel. The contract lost more than 5% of its value last week, falling back from a record above $78 hit the week earlier.
