Very true..I like the banter and discussions..but in the end, there ain't crap I can do about anything..Except accept it and go oh well..Now if it comes to taking my guns and Hummer away because it don't suite someone else's standard of living...all I can say, is come and try and get them..Plan on calling 911 first though, cuz somebody will be leaving in a body bag.

I am in the 16 year boat also. I was thinking at 25 years of service (in 5 more years) should I push for an involuntary separation, grab the pension now and look for a contact job (IT) or just ride it out until the end.

As I get closer I will have to see whats available and what regs have changed over that time span. Hate to have to give up those 50 days of paid time a year. :cheesy:

this kinda goes by if they contract our jobs out then we would look alot closer at early out:D

I apologize for jumping in here but I think you misread Silverbird's post. You're not in the same boat at all. Silverbird has 10-16 years to go to retirement. You have 16 years IN and just 5 years to go to 25. You need to seriously think about getting a retirement estimate from your HR office NOW, and again in 2 years.

I read the comment that Silverbird has 16 left maybe 10 depending on circumstances. I am in that boat. My MRA is 56 1/2 and I am currently 40 years old and I have 20 years in. So I see myself having to work until age 56 1/2 to get my pension without a reduced annuity.

Now if Kar's plan comes through for me in 5 more years I can take my early out and still work doing what I do now just for a different employer.

Talk to me about the HR (CPAC) preretirement screening.

Maybe I'm confused, but I still don't see that you are in the same boat at all. Silverbird has 10-16 left. You have 5 left. Big difference. XL- Lady has some great information on her thread about retirement. Have you already had the pre-retirement screening? Tell me about it! Mine's scheduled for next month.

I think he's thinking of an early out (buyout) since he's 40? My chance of that on the other hand is really slim, last buyout we had we lost our most experienced people on one end (including nearly emptying out one office) and a lot of secretaries/support staff - both of which are very hard to replace (the support staff because who can live on GS 5-7?) so they are really leery about doing that one again.

For me, my calculation is figuring earliest retirement at 56 (10) or more likely 62 (16) for that extra added bonus of 10% a month to FERS pension and more money in TSP, on the last day of December to take all the annual leave pay I can run off with.

You might rethink that lump sum annual leave. I've been to 2 retirement seminars within the last 5 years that advise against it. Because of the expected mass boomer retirements, some agencies are now doing "terminal leave" which allows them to keep experienced people longer. You figure out your "lump sum" retirement date. Then instead of taking a lump sum payment, you stay on the payroll working an agreed number of days per week taking annual and sick leave, which you will have extrapolated out to a "final" retirement date. You continue to earn sick and annual leave while continuing to contribute to FERS and SS until you reach that date. Less of a SS hit if you're under 60. A couple of people here are doing that now. Because you're taking leave, you're still a full-time employee. I forgot to mention, another one is on terminal leave for the next 18 months....no work, just enjoying life. Agency decided that was just fine. However, if they need him, they can call him to work, but not more than 1 day a week. Nice!

I think a lot of FERS boomers are in for an unpleasant surprise...working for an unanticipated extra 5 years because they didn't manage their TSP.

LOL... I love FERS. Its all I have ever known :nuts:. Yes, I have the years just not the age. I have to wait 16 years to reach age 56 to meet my MRA. Of course I will have 36 years by then. 36% FERS, TSP (Hoping for a 10-15% Return per year :nuts: ), SS, and then Guard retirement.

If only they drop the Guard retirement to 55 instead of 60. Then I can get TSP, Guard and the SS supplemental by age 56.
 
I'm CSRS and happy to be one of the last ones (how sweet it is).

Ditto...CSRS has been beddy, beddy good to me;)...Just glad ole RawHide (Reagan) never got his way and made it the "HIGH 5" for retirement figurin.
