New Laptop

I actually hate working on a laptop - hate the keyboards and I don't feel comfortable. I also have to use a mouse and not the flaky finger pad, or whatever they are called.

Obviously there are times they are needed, but I don't think I will ever do what Driz has done and go totally lappy.

Got to go now, my VCR is making a funny noise. :D

If you get a full size one it's so close you won't be much able to tell the difference in a short time. Now try swapping back and forth with a sub sized off and on and you will go bonkers or at least I did. As for going back and forth with the PC's at work and my lappys I really don't notice. The thing I like the best is to be able to watch tv and fidget with the laptop or sit in bed with it. We don't do much else like games and such so there is no need for monster hard drives ect. Pictures ect you can do about as easily with either type I guess. FWIW they make those wireless mice for about ten bucks that seem to work good. I have one for GPS in the boat but don't feel much need. Those little pads work pretty well once you get the hang of em really and they are touch and spot adjustable which helps too. I used to love the track ball until they faded from the scene. Now I think I would much prefer the pad overall but like everything else the pad has vastly improved over the early models.

I have the laptop I previously mentioned plus a larger 17 inch one that I have a wireless mouse and keyboard hooked up to through the USB ports. Works just the same as having a monitor and a keyboard on a PC, but no big bulky thing under the desk.......

The only thing I hate about laptops is that they seem to break down after a year or two. I have 3 that are locked up and don't know what to do with them.

MacBook pro 13".

I agree, Mac is the best. Had Dell PC and a laptop, and they were ok. Mac's are very user friendly and the support team from Apple is great. Lots of tutorials on the Apple site that are easy to follow. Go to an Apple store and check it out.

Thats why I get the 400 dollar vs the 1000 ones. For that money it's not so bad. Another little trick I learned at the point of my wallet was the secret of the SN of your operating system. You need the SN off that sticker on the bottom of the machine to get it fired up if it's completely locked. No more installation disks right????? Thanks a lot. TROUBLE IS, they have it on the bottom where that tiny number gets smeared. Makes you wonder why they put them there doesn't it? Just like making thin exaust pipe for your car when the OEM lasted 10 years plus. Anyways transcribe that number to a piece of take up inside under the battery or otherwise safe place s you don't wind up with a dead Dell like me.
As for the run time don't forget the newer ones are starting to come out with LED backlights. I have no experience with these at all but if they work as well as other LED's your battery consumption simply has to drop tremendously. Even the newer cheapo's like mine without LED last an hour and a half. I run mine like a U boat. Don't keep it charging all the time to minimize all the snagging and bending on the cable and just plug it in when it hits the warning or I am done whichever comes first. Works pretty well and I only have to order a new power cord a couple times a year now it seems.

Thanks for the complement but please don't confuse me with someone who knows what he is doing. Rather I am SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN and those little snippets some were paid dearly for. Strangely you don't see much about little things like these on the computer sites and boards. There is nothing I like to do more than pass on free info no matter who it benefits to keep them from getting ripped off. I'm not Clark Howard yet but working on it. For $200 you should be able to surf anything you like and still not cry too loud if someone knocks a soda onto the keyboard.......... One last thing I just found myself doing with my HP;s today. Watch how you leave them laying around on beds, blankets on their sides ect. Try to leave the vent's free of obstruction. Most of em get plenty hot just sitting there charging ect.

A Gateway 10.1 LED LCD with windows 7 intel atom
1GB DDR3 memory
160GB storage
2 in 1 card reader
Built in webcam
3 cell lithium ion battery

That is an excellent buying price for a Gateway Netbook. This model usaually costs $300 for a N270 Atom processor Netbook with similar features. It also has wireless 802 b/g? What does it weigh?

Hardly a thing easy to carry around. Got it on sale a hot buy at best buy.

I seem to miss all those
Did you sign up on a board, or just happen on it?

I was going to suggest an iPad Gen1.
Several of my work friends have them and I'm always impressed.
The bluetooth keyboards are great, as well the drive is flash memory.

That GW sounds great though, at about 1/2 the price of a 3G/WiFi Gen1 with all the protection you would need.

Nice snag!

Another EW_ret sighting! Glad to see you still hanging arount EW!

Are any of you Woot'ers (www.woot.com)? They just had my laptop on there for $499 in today's Woot-off. That's $100 less than I paid less than a year ago.

I have two Toshiba notebooks. I bought the big 18.4 inch Satellite P500 last year with 12 cell battery, but its heavy at eleven pounds. My old Toshiba Satellite is only 17inch, but four pound lighter. I have not heard of Woot'ers. I'll check them out.
