Well the market gave back half of what it took away yesterday. Let's hope we can gain some more ground over the next few days.

Biggest solar storm in years races toward Earth

By SETH BORENSTEIN | Associated Press

"WASHINGTON (AP) — The largest solar storm in five years was due to arrive on Earth early Thursday, promising to shake the globe's magnetic field while expanding the Northern Lights.
The storm started with a massive solar flare earlier in the week and grew as it raced outward from the sun, expanding like a giant soap bubble, scientists said. When it strikes, the particles will be moving at 4 million mph..."

The aurora is an interesting phenomenon. We have been studying electricity and magnetism in my physics class and I learned how this happens. We haven't gone Into a lot of detail but the way I understand it, the ions get caught in the magnetic field lines and spiral toward the poles. The lights come from the interaction of these particles with different gases as they collide and give off energy. The color depends on the concentration of the different gases such as hydrogen and nitrogen.

Maybe this is the prelude to the Dec 21 deadline? Actually, I've heard that the prediction for the next coronal mass ejection aimed at us is well after dec 21 and isn't supposed to be really big.

You are correct about the aurora. As far as predicting CME's. To the best of my knowledge that has not been perfected yet, sort of like trying to predict an earthquake. However, the 11 year cycle is supposed to peak in 2013.

HB, Right now it is mostly luck. Having a number at the front of your name puts right at or near the top of the heard when you are all tied. At the beginning of the year you are always ahead of me in the Tracker. Good luck.
