Mutual Fund Window in TSP!

Finally- there is an article today on Government News, Research and Events for Federal Employees - GovExec.com that says the Thrift Board announced they will be opening that mutual fund window in 2022. Here is the article, and the link:

Officials at the federal government’s 401(k)-style retirement savings program announced on Monday that the Thrift Savings Plan has awarded a new recordkeeping services contract to Accenture Federal Services, which will provide participants with a number of new account management features in the coming years.

TSP Participant Services Director Tee Ramos announced the contract at Monday’s monthly meeting of the Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board, which administers the retirement program. Following an 18-month transition period to the new vendor, Ramos said participants can expect to see a variety of new features that will make managing their accounts easier.

“On Friday, Nov. 13, [TSP Executive Director] Ravi [Deo] signed the contract with Accenture Federal, and they will provide a modernized experience while maintaining and increasing the high level of service that TSP customers have grown to expect,” Ramos said. “New features will include a mutual fund window, e-signature capabilities and a mobile app, which is set to be available in mid-2022.”

About time, but let's get moving. Mid-2022? Let me guess, these "difficult times" are preventing progress.

Get with the program TSP, there are new investing companies/apps popping up monthly. Meanwhile, TSP is still the same archaic site it's been for over 10 years.

I want that mutual fund window so I can put some into some kind of precious metal fund, and also into some REIT fund. Looking to diversify a little.

Looking for recommendations for those two areas- best metals and best REIT suggestions, anyone?

Not all REIT's are the same - especially in COVID times. Residential REIT's might be okay, but in the commercial space it is looking like more offices and buildings might continue to downsize. A broad market index already REIT's covered. So unless you want to overweight them, there's really no need. But then again, they say buy when there is blood in the street, and this is the hardest some REIT sectors have been hit since you know when.

Metals, I guess they have a spot somewhere in everyone's heart, and throwing 5% of assets at it might not be a bad idea going forward. A lot will depend on if/how they decide to implement it. Commodities fund? Gold fund? Silver fund? Who knows.
