Multiple moves to G not possible?

I'm a little confused about making more than one IFT to the G fund after my two regular IFT's have been used. As I understood it, once I have used my two IFT's I could then move portions of my allocations back into the G fund.

Here's what I did. My first IFT was 50% G and 50% S. My second was 50% S, 50% I. Today I tried to move the 50% I back into G while keeping 50% S. When I tried to do this I was given an error message saying that I had to move everything into G. Is that right?

doesn't sound right, should be able to move any portion of holdings into G as long as you are not increasing percents in equity holdings.

how far to spokaloofrom where you're at?

I tried twice and it wouldn't let me split it between the two so I just went 100% G to try to lock in todays gains (hopefully tomorrow won't wipe them out). Still would've like to keep 50% in S for the time being...oh well.

I'm in a tiny town called Dayton, about 30 miles NE of Walla Walla.

i'm familiar with the terrortory, they ever get that del monte plant thing figured out? i welded a bunch of stainless in that place, trucks plum full, everyone in hairnets, nice downtown, lots of pioneer brick. busy busy.

Moved everything to Peru a few years ago. Damn near sank the whole community. Town's trying something new with a first of a kind organic natural foods processing facility - Blue Mountain Station. Supposed to break ground this year I think.

is that little store still there on the left side of the main drag on the way into town? I think across from the county shops or such?

Dayton Mercantile? Oh yeah, don't think that place is ever going away. Only place in town to get the most expensive groceries anywhere! That's why I shop in Walla Walla.

hmmmm that doesn't sound right, you should be able to move whatever percent you want back into G.

The only problem I can see that you may have run into is when you went 50% S 50% I. I fund went up much more than S and therefore would have left you with <50% in S and >50% in I....

So when you went to make the change you were technically telling the system to increase your S fund. Hope this makes sense.

ozzyman, good catch. That is the only reason I could think of as why ArchAngel could not do the 50/50 move.

Didn't think about that. I'll have to try that if I'm in that position again, say 48% S and 52% G and see if that works.

Can you please post your last 3 IFT's in bullet format, as you tried to input into tsp.gov? I'm a little confused as to what you did?

For example:
1/3 = 50% G, 50% S
1/5 = 50% S, 50% I
1/12 ......??

Thanks!

ArchAngel, please log in to TSP.GOV and look at your account balance the day the IFT was effective and the day before. Let us know what the percentages were for each fund on those two days.

Thanks, PessOptimist

1/2/11 - 50% G, 50% S
1/5/11 - 50% S, 50% I
1/12/11 - Attempted 50% S, 50% G but it wouldn't let me so I went 100% G.

I think I see what the problem was now. According to TSP.gov I had 56.66% I fund and 43.34% S fund, even though I had my previous IFT set at 50/50. I'll bet this is because I had my contribution allocations going 100% I fund. So yes, according to those numbers it seems that I was trying to bump up the S fund to 50%. I'll be sure to look at that next time.

It appears that you could not transfer 50% from the "S" fund because you only had 43.34% in it.

Well this makes total sense now.... you could have made an IFT for 57%G and 43% S..... i think 58%G and 44% S would have worked as well....

You were essentially asking tsp to increase you holdings of S fund from 43.34% to 50% which you cant do if your out of IFTs. Next time make sure you pay close attention to your current allocation. Doesn't matter what you did several days or weeks ago, percentages change depending on price fluctuation.

I had never heard that. Interesting. You would think with the thousands of IFT's that's we've recorded over the years that someone else would have run into this situation and reported it here.

Has anyone else had this problem? I could be wrong, but I am going to guess that it is something else - unless there is a percentage limit. A 6% or 7% increase is pretty large increase for a fund that is not supposed to increase.

I'll dig a little to see what I can find. Very interesting ArchAngel. It's nice to get a question/problem that we haven't heard 100 times already. :D

Simply by the 'name' of this Thread ...

I'd like to point out that: If you have the brain of a BEAR

Especially one that SQUALES

Unlimited moves to G are 'possible' and have been proven.
