I'm receiving a medical retirement from Army and was wondering what to do. I know I can no longer make contributions once I'm out, but do I leave the money I currently have in sit there? Also, when I discharge I will be going to the Border Patrol. I think they also utilize the TSP or am I wrong? If so, will future contributions go into a seperate account or the one I have from the military? Can I roll the one from the military into the new one from Border Patrol?

Hey rdero,

I am a civil servant and an Air Force reservist. I have two accounts. Read the TSP info here, it will explain everything. You will have two accounts.

Thanks fo the info. I looked at a different part on the TSP site. I'll do better research next time. Thanks for the help

You need to call TSP Thrift line and ask these questions. I am bias against the
thrift board and would roll it to a IRA so that I could trade it and make a better gain without major limitations on investment choices and number of interfund transfers.

But then again I am very bias.

I haven't had my TSP that long. I'm one of the "dummies" that didn't take the opportunity. I thought I would be able to stay in but is not the case after being wounded. I probably will just have what I have now an transfer it to a civilian account with Border Patrol. Still have alot of reading to do about all this! Thanks for the advice.

That would probably be the best thing to do. Roll it over to Civilian TSP and learn at your own pace about investing and trading. As soon as you get to the BP get those contributions going and make it hurt to catch up.

Good luck and continue to ask questions, just realize many here may be reluctant to tell you exactly what to do because it all depends of a case by case basis. That is why I always recommend calling the Thriftline or a financial planner.

Good luck and many, many thanks for your service.:)
