Buy In May & Never Go Away?

We finished the month of May in a relatively lackluster fashion, but the gains this month were remarkable. For the month, the Dow gained +4.3%, S&P 500 +3.3% and Nasdaq +3.1%. Based on what I've been hearing, holding new highs on the S&P 500 is considered by many to be an important tell. Now that new all-time highs have been reached there, investors want to make sure that the upside momentum continues without much of a delay and holding new highs in the short-term acts as sufficient confirmation as short-term overbought conditions are worked off.

Beyond the short-term, my view is that the market will continue to climb the wall of worry as long as this trend channel holds and the same conditions we've been in continue (M&A mania, liquidity, bearish sentiment, etc.) The real danger comes when that trend channel is tested and fails which I think will happen. Unfortunately, much like everyone else, I'm not smart enough to know when or at what level that will come.

08:35 am : S&P futures vs fair value: +6.7. Nasdaq futures vs fair value: +8.2. The data that hit the wires at the bottom of the hour fell to the bullish side of things as May job growth (157K) was stronger than expected while the core-PCE number (+0.1%) in the personal income and spending report was lower than expected. That combination has provided an added lift to the futures market, which is keying off the view that economic activity appears to be picking up while inflation is moderating.

Notice

Notice of change.

Since I retired, I no longer represent the majority of members. The weekly thread of "Market Talk (date)" does not seem to represent the path of active employees.

I'm way to conservative with "capital preservation of the brain".

My views may be doing more harm than good. The regular "Market Talk" has added OIL, EBBS CHART, THE BAR, THE CORNER, CAVES, PENS and even DECILE'S (what ever that is)......

Temporarily I'mna gonna move over to the Topic "TSP Strategies" --"Retirement Talk" and start a weekly thread "The Retirement Kingdom".

I figure "retirement" will be a thingy of more importance to TSPTalk and we shouldn't interfer with the tally sheets of those gaining the "rewards".

However, for some of us we have to be aware of "risks".

I might need some guidelines for the thread i.e., anyone allocating 100% equities will be automatically deleted....

Regards and be careful!
