Market Talk / February 11th - 17th

Fabijo,
Thanks to you also, for the detailed information you have posted. Somebody told me that IWM is a pretty good ETF for the Russell 2000. Does anybody have experience with this one? Spaf, do you know if ST carries it?

I use TradeKing. It takes a while to be able to use your money - something like 10 days after opening the account - but once you can, they are great. If you have enough money, you can trade options also (at 65 cents per contract). All trades are $4.95 - that's buy/sell market, limit, and stop orders. They also allow you to set rules for the stock while you are purchasing them. Say, buying this stock will trigger another event that lets you sell it if it reaches a certain price.

Another broker that I would love to go with is <A href="http://"http://www.interactivebrokers.com/en/main.php" target=_blank>Interactive Brokers. They are cheap, but you need to be active and have a pretty big amount to start. They let you trade on nearly every stock/bond/options/forex/etc. exchange you can think of. Check out their crazy list here: <A href="http://www.interactivebrokers.com/en/trading/products.php?ib_entity=llc" target=_blank>http://www.interactivebrokers.com/en/trading/products.php?ib_entity=llc

They'll let you trade in exchanges in Canada, Germany, France, Belgium, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, UK, China, Japan, Australia, Singapore, and South Korea.

Sponsor,

^DWCPF Dow Jones Wilshire 4500 Completion Index small to med stock index fund TSP S-fund (Yahoo/BigCharts), however the symbol doesn't work on www.stockcharts.com
The nearest one is $EMW and a comparable one to that is IShares SPSC 600 Index [IJR] or IShare RUS 2000 Index [IWM]
They track similar but not exactly.
Maybe I need to rent a monkey with a dart board.

Because I use Scottrade and I like IShares I may give up on ^DWCPF and go back to IJR.

Spaf,
Yesterday you told me that Small Caps Index = [IJR]. I am not familiar with this ETF. Do you know if it behaves in similar fashion as to EMW index, or to the RUT? Reason being that our S fund behaves more like a small to medium fund, and it closely mirrors the EMW. I would like to know if this is the closest alternative, or not? Thanks in advance.

Spaf,

The comparison you have made is to the point. The benefit is that you understand both the TSP needs ans ST's funds. Thus, your experience is invaluable -- a big time-saver! Thank you:) .

Let's hope it turns around shortly!

Glad to oblige!

It appears the markets might have found a bottom for the day. S&P has tested 1432 twice and EMW has also made 2 bottoms. If these bottoms hold, tomorrow should be ....(I don't want to say it becuase I don't want to jinx myself.):D

If it now rebounds and heads up, it's my fault.

I'ts because I moved everything to "G" effective COB today.

One of the guys in my office wants to know what I am doing with my TSP account, so he can do exactly the opposite.

So far this year, he's four percent ahead of me. :embarrest:

Remember
Some of us are retired, so our prospective is skewed towards capial preservation.
The current market is not bullish-strong.
About 50% equities and 50% safe funds is about the maximum I care to play even in a strong bullish market. It's a been there done that, and now I'm going fishing...Not!...It's too cold!....I'll watch fishing on TV, and socks on CNBC. Nnuut with the wine and tsptalk with the pizza!.....
