Major Quake Hits Japan

Re: Major quake hits Japan

I'm not really worried how this will effect the market, as I'm already sitting in G. I'm more worried about some people I know up in Northen Honshu. The live TV coverage I'm watching is pretty rough. Ships run aground, boats floating down residential streets, buildings on fire, and the normally composed Fuji TV announcer Ando-san (female) is reporting in a hard hat and seemingly without makeup.

The tsunami is on its way here to Okinawa, but I live safely atop a hill. I hope we're far enough south that the damage is minimal.:worried:

Re: Major quake hits Japan

Having not see it all because I've only been up for an hour, Fatalities to this point seem to be small considering.
Relief needs to descend on Japan and fighters need to be patrolling over Libya.

Re: Major quake hits Japan

Not a lot of fatalities, but entire coastal communities have been swallowed by the sea. It will cost billions to rebuild. For a country already drowning in debt and enduring all kinds of financial bad news, this was pretty much the last thing Japan needed right now. Maybe China will take advantage of this moment of weakness and lay fresh claims to the Senkaku islands. Or Russia can encroach further on the northern islands. Or what the hell - North Korea can just fire off a SCUD for good measure.

It is, however, taking the emphasis off of what would have been the big story - the PM Kan was just about to be exposed for illegal campaign donations. Let's just say that now is probably not a good time to invest in the Nikkei.

Re: Major quake hits Japan

Not looking good there. Nuclear emergency issued as one of the reactors cooling system is corrupt.

Re: Major quake hits Japan

Sensei: how much , how high will it get in Okinawa? I would imagine the kids are home from school & everyone is on high ground?
Thank you for your information on Kitakyushu where my grandson is teaching...I'm hoping the Korean side of Kyusi island's coast is clear. He has sent word that he is fine... but I am not sure he knows the `whole picture.'
I pray you and Okinawa are too !

(originally posted in 3hr warning thread, hadn't noticed this thread.. so I moved it.

Okinawa, Japan Not Considerably Affected by Japan Earthquake & Tsunami

11 March 2011, 14:52 BST

Okinawa, Japan is home to 14 large U.S. military bases. With news of the massive earthquake in Japan and resulting tsunami, many U.S. citizens are legitimately concerned about their relatives in Okinawa.
The good news: Okinawa seems to be far enough away from the earthquake that it is hardly being affected by the tsunami. Here’s an update from someone living there:

Re: TSUNAMI WILL IMPACT WEST COAST IN 3 HOURS

I just read NPR report. first wave hit Seaside, they evac'd a hotel there ahead of time. I rented a beachhouse there several years ago, have walked past that hotel, which is a little higher than the beachhouse I was in. Glad I'm not there right now.

Re: Major quake hits Japan

You gotta ask-

What the heck are these people thinking?
This is a photo off of Yahoo a few minutes ago-

They went down to the beach in Hawaii TO WATCH THE TSUNAMI COME IN. !!! ? !!!

Can we just hand them a DARWIN award right now, and get it over with?

Amazing set of pictures

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/42024158/displaymode/1247/?beginSlide=1#

Our long-time local (PDX) favorite Japanese business owner, Junki Yoshida (Yoshida's Sauces) was on the news live saying he just came back from Japan recently, and to this point all forms of communication he has used in trying to reach his family have failed, but for 1 non-descript text message.
We saw a 3-5 foot surge on the Oregon Coast, it appears. The incoming tsunami remnant appeared to coincide with the outgoing tide, so negligible reported damage.
