Major Quake Hits Japan

Re: Major quake hits Japan

Hi Grandma (and others posting here),
Okinawa is fine. A tsunami warning is still in effect for us and all of Japan, and afterschocks are expected to continue for the next week. I actually have an old friend who works at one of the nuclear power plants in Fukushima Prefecture (not sure if it's the one with the leak) - he FB'd me to let me know he made it home all right, but had to navigate his way through a lot of fires and fallen buildings. Wow.

Your grandson should be all right in Kita-Kyushu. Like you say, it's on the Japan Sea side (facing Korea), and has the lowest warning level for mainland Japan.

I hope all of you on the West Coast are safe. Take care!

Sensei: how much , how high will it get in Okinawa? I would imagine the kids are home from school & everyone is on high ground?
Thank you for your information on Kitakyushu where my grandson is teaching...I'm hoping the Korean side of Kyusi island's coast is clear. He has sent word that he is fine... but I am not sure he knows the `whole picture.'
I pray you and Okinawa are too !

(originally posted in 3hr warning thread, hadn't noticed this thread.. so I moved it.

My heart goes out for the good people in Japan they are great folks just like us an this is a terrible thing, what a nightmare. How can we help, Mother Nature rules. If I lived there I think I would move.:notrust:

I've been to every major Island in Japan. Made 5 three week trips spanning 5 years. It's a wonderful, clean place with great culture and people. I hate to see that happen but I believe they will bounce back faster than the US could ever think about doing if this had happened to us.

Explosion heard at Fukushima nuclear plant, 4 injured: TEPCO

TOKYO, March 12, Kyodo

Four people have been injured in an explosion that occurred at the No. 1 reactor of the quake-hit Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, the operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Saturday.

The explosion was heard at 3:36 p.m. following large tremors and white smoke was seen at the facility in Fukushima Prefecture, the company said.

The four workers were working to deal with problems caused by a powerful earthquake that hit northeastern Japan on Friday.

No more details yet. This is serious.

The cooling system has been knocked out.

In Fukushima, smoke could be seen billowing out of a building housing a nuclear reactor. Japanese media say radiation levels outside the plant rose after the blast.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) says it is seeking more information on the situation. Before the explosion occurred, authorities said radioactive material had been found outside one of the plant's reactors, which had lost power and cooling abilities.

Prime Minister Kan also mentioned speaking with President Barack Obama, who conveyed his deepest condolences, and offered whatever assistance that
would be needed.

Very, very serious issue. If the cooling system is knocked out, they have a major, major problem.

Pray - now. Hard.

HUGE serious problem with the reactor. I've got some incredible video that I am capturing at the moment, that I got off BBC, of the reactor building exploding.

Here is the video from the BBC:

I slowed the explosion down by playing it back and you can clearly see a shock wave when it goes off (CNN)... It appears to be away from their reactor domes... This is the plant that is closest to epicenter... Amazing Video!:worried::worried:

Some reports now putting the number of dead and missing in Japan at over 10,000.

Very, very significant loss of life.

Truly a sorrowful situation over there. Please keep them in your prayers and help if you can.

12 Mar 2011 Japan's nuclear safety agency is reporting an emergency at a second reactor in the same complex where an explosion had occurred earlier. The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said early Sunday that the cooling system malfunctioned at Unit 3 of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant. The agency said it was informed of the emergency by Tokyo Electric, the utility which runs the plant.

Another one about to go

The AP is reporting that, based on an estimate by the police spokesman in Miyagi Prefecture, but none of the Japanese TV stations are hinting at anything greater than 3,000 dead & missing. I think the AP/police are right though. This disaster has been odd in that the news keeps getting more and more grim as the days wear on. The scope of damage in terms of loss of life and property, stoppage of commerce, and dismal hope of recovery in the regions swamped with sea water (and possibly radioactivity), make this probably the worst disaster in an advanced country since WWII. I have friends and in-laws up there who have been without water and power, now are running out of food and gas. At least people here are civilized and haven't started robbing and killing each other.

For those tuning in for the financial aspect: all the car companies are shut down indefinitely, Disneyland is closed for at least the week, and the PM announced planned power outages throughout the Tokyo and surrounding areas.
