KevinD's Account Talk

I saw that. Thanks Brother. :)

Your most welcome. I write as if everyone knows what I'm talking about.
So if you must, read it over a couple of times and I would be happy to
answer any follow up questions which come to mind. Thats what I do best. ;)

Gosh I'm glad I found this board.

Last month, right after I found you guys, I used my 2 IFT's to move (50% per move) from L2020 to 100% G.

On Oct 2 I moved 2% into C just to see what would happen. Well I'll tell you what happened. I lost 11.54% of that money in just 7 days. I can't imagine what some of you fine people have been going through.

I went back through my account and found the largest balance on Dec 10 2007. I am down -6.58% from that high and -5.21 year to date. I am currently still 2% C and 98% G.

I have learned so much in the 5 weeks that I have been on this board and I just want to thank each and every one of you for your knowledge and patience with this n00b. I really do appreciate it.

With the TSP share prices being what they are it really is tempting to jump back in but I'm just not comfortable chasing bounces. Currently my plan is to just just sit on the lilly pad till after the first of the year and see how the election turns out and wait to see if this bail out does any good. Something extremely obvious will have to happen for me to deviate from my plan. Either that or I'll have a brain fart and do something really stupid...one of the 2.

Good luck to everybody!

Think about how many shares you can buy of the C fund at $10. We may have less than 8-10% left to the downside but as much as 50% waiting for us on the upside - catch it now and join the pain crew. Misery as you can tell loves company.

The Stupid Question Thread!

Lets make this the stupid question thread. (I know, there are no stupid questions...yeah right :D)

Lets say that Johnny has $234567.89 in his TSP with 100% G. On October 3, 2008, before 12:00 noon he decides to make an ITF of 50% C.

1/2 of 234567.89 = 117283.94

Are the share prices that are posted at TSP.gov the opening price for the day? Monday Oct 6 shows a price of 12.1217. So Johnny ends up with 9675.5356 shares of C?

Johnny is not me. I'm still 98G and 2C. I'm still just trying to figure this out in my own mind. I have to go stick mail in mailboxes. I'll be back some time after 10:00 eastern for a 30 minute lunch...then some time after 4:00 this evening.

Have a nice day.

If the IFT was made before noon on the 3rd the share price would be 12.6079, closing price on the 3rd. The prices listed on the TSP website are closing prices for the day. An IFT before 1200 is supposed to be effective at the closing price that day.

Have a nice day.

Since the IFT was made before noon on Oct 3rd. , the closing price on the TSP.gov site for October 3rd will be the price used to rebalance the account the next morning. The number of shares that the 50% C fund was converted to will be shown on the web site on October 4th AM. Since October 3rd was a Friday, the opening price on October 6th (Monday morning) will be the same as Saturday Oct 4th.

Re: The Stupid Question Thread!

So what's Johnny's balance in the C fund on Monday Oct 6 ?

30 minutes isn't long enough to scarf down some left over lasagna and play on TSPTalk. :D

Thanks for playing and I hope everyone is having a wonderful day! :)

I second that belief. The leading cause of mortality among members of my chosen profession is aircraft crashes. True story. I've done my time aboard ships, seen one set down quickly when a small part fell off midflight, known someone personally who will walk w/2 canes the rest of his life (different incident).

I went up in a ship 1 day immediately before and a second day immediately after a pancake crash occurred same company-no survivors. That second day I was up with an ex-Nam pilot I'd flown with before and had full confidence in. All we 3 aboard could think about was the crash the day before. Mid-flight, our pilot did an instantaneous close-to-the ground maneuver related to our mission, I didn't flinch but the 3d person-Hispanic heritage, turned white as a sheet. Never forgotten that day.

Other memorable trips included a flight 15 years after the two-cane incident, doing the same thing that guy was doing that day 15 years earlier. Our trip was w/o incident but I thought about the 2-cane incident the entire flight. The 2-cane incident happened my first week on a job, first year out of college. Lasting impression there too, which is when I learned the professional mortality stat at the age of 23. Long story short, I've gone up plenty of times, but never just for the sake of going up.
