I am looking for companies with growth and who pay dividends. The stock price has been on fire the past 6 months and they have paid dividends since 1923. They acquired Cooper Industries for 11.8 billion end of 2012 which allows them to compete outside the US with some larger global rivals. I expect emerging markets to boom and Eaton (and me) with them.

Eaton dipped a tad this month, but I held on and it appears to be coming back nicely. And coming up on another dividend. My TSP I moved 49-G, 1-C, 50-S. I might move more into G tomorrow, leaving a tad in S. Not sure. Starting to get defensive closer I get to retirement. I plan on rolling it all into an IRA and diversifying across sectors and markets. With about 1/4 of my money going into Birchtree yummie dividend stocks.

Date: April 24, 2013

DUBLIN, Ireland … The Board of Directors of diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton (NYSE:ETN) today declared a quarterly dividend of $0.42 per ordinary share payable May 24, 2013 to shareholders of record at the close of business on May 6, 2013. Eaton has paid a dividend every year since 1923.

Moved into stocks for a bit in TSP, 40-G, 20/20/20 C/S/I. Missed the run, but I not chasing the leader board, trying to make a little before I retire end of year. Preservation of capitol is important part now. I have a goal to roll into an IRA and I am at it now.

Looking to maybe sell my Eaton stock in my brokerage account and buy something else, or I might just hold on longer???. I'll do some research this week.

Bought ETN March 4, $62.30, currently sitting at $68.07. Plus some nice dividends along the way that added to my profit.

If I owned ETN I'd wait on the stock split, take another ten points and then sell half if I were so inclined. ETN is easily a $100 stock.

It has been a while since I posted. I've been planning my retirement.

This morning, Sunday January 12, 2014, was my first official day of retirement. I have been off work since Jan 2, 2014, using a few sick days. ;)
I still cashed in well over 1900 hours.

25 years, 7 months, 6 days as Fed (but who's counting). Retired under LEO/FF/ATC. With my 5 1/2 years military and accumulated sick leave I have 32 years credible service.

In 30 days I'll be transferring my TSP into a Rollover IRA.

I'll post dates/timeline in the Retirement Thread for those of you interested in how long everything takes.

You might consider a peek at Merrill Edge online - if you do a self-directed rollover IRA with a minimum $200K they will give you a $600 bonus and you'll qualify for 30 free trades/month every month. You can build an income stream buying individual stocks and possibly get some capital appreciation along the way. You actually qualify for the 30 free trades with only $50K. They will link you to a Bank of America checking account if you desire - that way you can access cash when you need it.

Congrats, Kauf !!! Now you can unplug that alarm clock and start living those "6 Saturdays and a Sunday" !!! I'll be curious to hear how your rollover goes...

Best Wishes for a great retirement !

Congratulations on your retirement Kaufmanrider! We are close to the same schedule. My last day was 1-2-2014. Hope you are enjoying your retirement so far!

I am looking to roll over to Schwab. I have been a customer for years.

Birch, I believe right now Schwab offers 300 free trades for opening an account with a minimum of $50,000. They did have a $600 dollar bonus and 150 free trades for deposits over $250,000 but it expired. Maybe they will do it again before I actually do the roll over?

I want to have more diversification than TSP allows us. Buy and hold with most of my money for the next 10 years until I turn 59 1.2 (yep, I am 49 1/2 now) About 30% will go into 20-24 dividend stocks, 50-60% in 10-12 ETFs across a broad range in a "Couch Potato" type mix i.e., US, Foreign, Emerging, and within them sectors, Value, Growth, large cap, medium cap, small cap, micro cap, REIT's, Commodities, maybe Bonds, etc. I'll keep 10-20% to play with including my Brokerage Account, buying and selling trying to time the market just to keep me active. :-)

Congratulations on your retirement Kaufmanrider! I am also retired as of January 11, 2014. I had 22 years as LEO with the BOP. Wish you a good and profitable retirement.

Congrats Kauf
you have finally made it to where most of us work 30+ years to get to, RETIREMENT. BEST TO YOU. i plan to retire in May 2014 and i'm soooooo ready. i see a lot of retirees putting their TSP into some sort of IRA. i am very interested in what others do since they are like testing the water before i go in. your input in the retirement thread would be greatly appreciated. i still need to make some decisions on life insurance and how im going to do my annuity. enjoy your saturdays:D

thanks

Congrats Kaufman! Sounds like you have a very well thought out plan and strategy in place.

I looked at the Merril Edge deal that Birch suggested... looks enticing. But it's confusing... they say 300 free trades and then mention something about 30 free trades per month? I thought 30 x 12 months = 360? Why then is the offer not for 360 free trades?

(edit) Oh... woops... it looks like 300 free trades must be used in 90 days? Uh, wow. How many people make 300 trades in 90 days?

Doing 100 purchases a month is easy to do when you are putting cash to work - it only requires 5 buys per day and zoom there you are. I like to buy in blocks of ten individual wall flowers when I'm dumping money into the deep, dark, hole known as the market. Saving $150 a month forever adds up to real money over time.

Retired and TSP rolled into my IRA.

I started diversifying into the markets. 30% will be in 20-30 dividend paying stocks, 50% in a Lazy Portfolio (80-20 Stock/Bond split) and the final 20% will be my market timing portfolio.

For timing, I bought BIB Ultra BioTech and IYT Transports Index.

Dividends-so far
ATT 5% payout.
Chevron High payout
Eaton Good payout
Travelers low P/E - looked to be a value.
Tupperware announced increased earnings in Jan, but down 15% due to the emerging market issue. Near it's 52 week low.
