jpcavin's Account Talk

This market is starting too feel real funny. I don't know exactly but it does not feel right. May be time to cash in. I will have to keep my eyes open.

Bought some ANR in April 2012 @ 16.20 It closed at 3.57 yesterday. Who wants to compute that loss?
Anyway, I bought some more March 2014 @ 4.43 and again some more on July 24th @ 3.29. So far, I am down -10.81% Unless the company goes belly up, I ain't selling until I get my damn money back!

Today I only have a loss of -.81% in ANR. It may go down some tomorrow. Who knows? It just means I'll have to wait a little longer to recoup that -.81%

I am perplexed about something. Looking at the W4500, I noticed that both yahoo and google has the 50SMA around 976 while stockcharts has it around 1024. What charts do you use and what do your charts reflect? I know the computation is not as simple as just averaging everything out. However, with the exception of one day in August and one day in September, W4500 has not been bellow 1000 pts since May of this year. The 50SMA of 976 doesn't quite compute with me. I am more inclined to belief that stockcharts has the correct information. Being off by 50 points can have dire consequences when accuracy is so important.

What are your thoughts? Am I missing something?

DreamboatAnnie posted links to some good (free) charts aligned with the TSP funds. I've not done any comparisons, but I like what they present and they can be adusted/customized as well.

Well Lucy, I also found the same information recently. I am also interested in hearing what others have to say. I had been using Tom's link to W4500 and getting 976 for the 50sma. Maybe Tom should mention this across the board if he reads this.

I appreciate that. However, I still want to know which service is accurate and which is faulty.

Better to compute the moving averages and other indicators on your own rather than trust those provided on free stock charting websites. I've noticed that even on the stockcharts website, their charts do not properly compute longer term EMA's. For example, if you use their provided formula to compute EMA's from closing values, you'll notice that the resulting values do not match the value displayed when charting the same EMA on their site.

Yeah, it's starting to look that way. I can compute it myself but it would be nice to get a visual on those computation on a chart. I can't chart in excel.:(

Sent you a bunch of indicator charts for EFA and ^GSPC. Let me know if you have questions or would like the same charts sent for any other ticker symbol.

Hello, This evening I ran these numbers. There is a distinct difference between numbers from Stockcharts versus Big charts... Those differences occur regardless of whether you look at the SMA or EMA. There is a distinct and SIGNIFICANT difference between the two charting companies. I tried to use google and Yahoo finance but could not find way to obtain numbers. Maybe someone else can try and report their results. Per comments by Blueroadster about Stockchart's longer term EMAs being off from computed values, maybe Stockcharts numbers are off. Also, Jken mention Tom's numbers (1022.23 under $EMW and those are more in line with Stockcharts. I would like to see what other charting companies show for today.

Not sure which is more accurate.....if you compare the SMA (987) to the EMA (988) by Bigcharts, notice numbers are pretty close. Yet if you look at Stockchart's 50 day SMA (1029.62) versus EMA (1019.53) there is a bigger difference. Not sure which is right without doing math.

DWCPF-LOOKING at just 50 Day SMA
50 day SMA = 987 - per big charts
50 day SMA = 1029.62 -stockcharts.com

DWCPF -LOOKING at BOTH 10 & 50 day EMAs
EMA
10 day = 1007.81-stockcharts
50 day = 1019.53 - stockcharts

EMA
10 day = 990 Bigcharts
50 day= 988 Bigcharts

I just checked it with Scottrade and it shows 1025 or so for the 50sma. So I think google and yahoo finance are incorrect. Tom thinks yahoo is giving a five day moving average. Point is I won't use google or yahoo for any charting.

Concur. What would be the point of relying on faulty data? I think I will just use my own computation.

Just to throw my two cents into this, I've been keeping my own computations for some time now. Here is what my simple database shows:

Looks like Stockcharts is more in line with Ravensfan's computations as well as mine. I think I'll stick with Stockcharts.

Got them! Will be looking at them later today when I get a break. Thank you.

Cool...I just emailed you updated PDF files that incorporate today's closing price information for EFA and ^GSPC (yahoo was used to acquire all historical price information). Each file is ticker symbol specific, contains several overlays and now includes 30 technical indicators (recently added KST and Special K). :D

Hi, I think I may stick with BigCharts but check EMAs to Stockcharts. Reason being that i just compared Big Charts to Stockcharts and their numbers today are in line with each other. Prices and Bolllinger Bands were not ever an issue---just SMA and EMA. I am thinking the difference last week was more of a fluke. But can't really tell without comparing them daily for some time ... so I am going to do that just to be sure. My BigCharts links are just so fast and easy to use in a time crunch. But reliability is extremely important so unfortunately will need to test them to make sure.
