Intrepid_Timer's PUBLIC Account Talk

Got a signal to go back to equities. I transferred from 100G to 100S this morning. Hopefully I can get a quick 4-5% before the bottom drops out next week........................:worried:

I'm feeling better about my move back to the S fund this morning after reading that Iran will hold it's presidential election on June 12th and that the current a**hole's days are numbered.............:D

Sold FAZ at $4.55 for a gain of 2.94%. Bought FAS at $10.04. Current balance: $12833

Since you posted your balance I figure you wouldn't mind a few questions. Feel free to tell me to mind my own business. :)

How much did you start with? And how long have you been trading it?

What type account is it? Roth maybe?

How often do you make trades?

Where do you have the account? And what are the fees?

And anything else you might be willing to share with this old n00b. :o

This is a hypothetical account. Please see: http://www.tsptalk.com/mb/showpost.php?p=220205&postcount=105

I started it on 5/21/09 to show how limited our TSP accounts are, as are most 401K's. This is why my opinion is that one should only put enough in there TSP to get matching funds and then put the rest in a self directed retirement account.

Personally, I have a Roth IRA and a regular investment account with Scottrade. Once I decide to leave the fed. govt., I'll rollover my TSP money into a rollover IRA with another broker so as not to have all my eggs in one basket, so to speak.

Scottrade charges $7 per ETF trade so when I go from FAS to FAZ, or vice versa, it costs $14. I don't include these fees in this hypothetical account because when your account is $10000, a fee of .14% is pretty minimal. I'm a swing trader so I average about one trade per week.

Hope this helps.

BTW, I've been posting my ETF moves longer than I've had this hypothetical account. If I had started it from when I first started posting my moves, it would be at $70707. That's a gain of 607% in about 4 months :)

Just sold my FAZ at $4.87 for a gain of 5.18%. I missed a signal a few days ago so I'm going to stay in cash until I get my next signal. I should be long now.

Beginning balance as of 5-21-09: $10000 Current balance: $13269.

So I'm impressed! Would you consider sharing what signals you trade by either here or on EFTTalk? I'll be the first to admit that FAZ has kicked my butt. :embarrest:

Two of my main signals are the price of copper and the time of the month. Copper is a cheap enough commodity that businesses and countries don't stock pile it so they only buy it when they need it. If they are buying it, then they are building which means business is good and the markets go up.

As far as time of the month, as a swing trader, it is my experience that as a general guideline, you want to sell the first week of a month, buy the second, sell the third and buy the fourth. Again, this is just a general guideline.

Oh, and by week I mean trading weeks. IE first 5 trading days, second 5 trading days etc.

So you're a "W" investor too. I learned about the technique (moving in and out of the market by following the weekly cycle waves) from the Marketsci blog. I've found it to be less effective than technical analysis, of course, but if I have a question about what I'm seeing technically, then keeping in mind which week we're in seems to help in the decision making.

And watching copper commodity sales is a new one for me, but your explanation makes a lot of sense. Thanks for sharing! :)

I read this today and it made me :D. Thanks to your thoughtful tips we already knew that!

"...he uses copper as a leading indicator, since it’s found everywhere in our society and can be a bellwether of current or future building activity. High copper demand can signal expansion. iPath Dow Jones-UBS Copper Subindex Total Return (JJC) can signal turning points in the stock market or at least correlate with moves in the stock market and give extra confirmation that the market is going to continue in one direction or the other. JJC is up 60% year-to-date...."

Got a "go short" signal so I'll be buying FAZ back later today. I'm hoping we get some sort of bounce so I can buy it back cheaper than were it is now.

Just a question - why are you buying FAS at these extended market levels? Do you think the market and banking sector will rally in the next few days? (I sold FAS this AM and took a short position in FAZ @4.80 My thinking is that the risk of retesting spx 888-880 is near).

Probably won't be in it for more than a few days. I think the banking index could still gain 2-3% before it hits resistance. Like I said, just a short term move. In my bigger Scottrade, I only invested 50% in case we get another big drop later today or Monday. :D
