Initial FERS Supplement Receipt

Does anyone know when I should expect to receive my first FERS Supplement check?

I've been reading through various threads and don't see it mentioned.

Reading though the threads, it looks like I've had better luck than others on receiving their first interim FERS annuity check.

I retired Dec 31, 2011 from Dept of Army.
Received my 374 hours lump sum annual leave on Jan 25, 2012. 25% Federal income tax, 4.20% OASDI, and 1.45% Medicare taken out. Looks like I will get a big refund next year when I file 2012 taxes.
Received my "Retirement Services Reference Card" with Claim No. on Jan 23 from OPM, Password in seperate letter on Jan 24.
Received my first interim FERS (direct deposit) right on time, Feb 1, 2012. It was only 60% of what my full annuity was estimated to be. I was expecting 75%.

I recently just read an article on FEDSMITH (?) re retirement/OPM issues and I believe they stated that your interim pay is a % of your annuity however, you do not receive a % of the supplement as interim pay. Your first (full amount) annuity check will include your supplement as well as your full annuity. You will then receive any back pay to catch you up both in annuity and supplemental pay. A friend of mine retired 8/31/2011. His pay was adjudicated 12/31/2011, received full annuity and first supplemental pay. Same date there was a 2nd deposit for the back pay!!! Hope this helps!

It states..."The interim payment to new retirees includes a percentage of whatever the annuity is going to be, but $0.0 for the annuity supplement. Retirees must wait months before they start receiving anything at all for the supplement." Bottom line...you will receive your supplemental pay when OPM finalizes your annuity which can be anywheres from 4-9 months!!!! Hopes this helps!!!

I read on GOVEXEC.com that OPM stated to Senate Commitee that they (OPM) were sending approx. 80% of estimated FERS annuity due to 65K backlog as of 1/31/12. I'm disappointed to hear that you only received what you estimate to be 60% of your gross FERS annuity..

The supplement doesn't show up until you get the finalized payments. You only get a part of the fers part of retirement. Mine was very low. About 50% of fers pension only. I also had tsp withdrawals which happened right on time.

Is the 60% you say you recieved just based only on your estimated FERS Annuity, or is it based upon what you expected to receive from a combination of your FERS Annuity and FERS Supplement (Social Security off-set)?

Just my FERS Annuity.

I'm thinking it may be because I bought back military and temp time. Just a guess though.
Using ONLY my 23 years of permanent time, it works out to about 80% of my annuity.

I bought back 6 years of military time and 2 years of temp time (Jan 1987 to Nov 1988).

Using all 31 years, it works out to 60%.

Remember if you kept your health plan it will be deducted from your retirement which can make that 70 - 80 percent partial annuity look much smaller.

I retired 12/31/10. I got interim payments ~$1100/mo for 8 months and on the 9th month my regular ~$2150 (including supplement) and ~$7000 back pay. My A/L got me through. Here's hoping your TSP is healthy and you too so you can commence enjoying retirement.

...and the backlog is likely to only get worse. The Fed. Bureau of Prisons will likely see a massive exodus in the next few years as a result of the massive hiring in the early 90's as people become eligible under FLEO rules, and as folks get increasingly antsy regarding congress as they eye the Federal Employees earned benefits as a political football i.e. hi-5 if any pension at all, zero contribution to TSP, etc. Thus, more people headed for the door in just one agency. Compound that over the entirety of gov't, and OPM with it's outdated and inadequate systems will likely sink further behind.
