I know there are other threads out there about smart phones, but I can't seem to find them right now.

I'm considering getting a droid. Any tips?

Costs 100 for a new motorola 3G, increases monthly plan by $40 which is 4gig data, how long does that last?

I already cancelled cable tv a while ago, old unit only got one channel so the kid had all the shows memorized anyway, now thinking about cancelling dsl too. If I've got reception I've got wireless internet, if not I'm probably not worried about phone or computer anyway.

What about aftermarket security? What do you folks use?

I currently have the Samsung Galaxy S which has a beautiful screen and Cellular South unlimited access plan.
Android integrates with Gmail so you will need to set up an account with Google. Google now has all sorts of free software for just about everything you need from free online phone calls with a phone number to word processing.

burro which droid? i am a phones addict i can help you out.

do you browse the internet often? if so skip 3G and go straight to LTE for faster speed.

but if you can try to get a samsung phone why? you will love the screen more. as far as security go not much can be offer to ya, sorry but the wireless world is easy to hack.

p.s i typically use about 5gig in a month using tmobile 4G service, i do everything from streaming music to facebook, to checking blog.
 
Motorola Droid 3.

Why not Samsung? Household currently has 2 phones, Samsung Rogue and Samsung Reality sliders with the phone/text plan. Reality model has been quirky from the start, flimsy charge port that only takes juice from the factory home charger. And lately only if you stand it on end to get the connection just right. It's not the battery or available current, but the physical connection between phone and juice. Rogue model is at the 'new every two' cycle, no problems ever, but plenty of miles.

Plan on getting the droid and wiping the old rogue then reprogram reality's number to the rogue, just before I beat the **** out of reality with a hammer, or maybe shoot it a few times.

Going to see how the android platform works, maybe with mobile hotspot I can port through it with laptop for household internet access, ditch the monthly DSL invoice. When travelling use connecetions at accomodations, when home and data usage is nearing limit then I know of a couple of available unsecured wireless networks in range, reduce reuse recycle.

Does time spent using 4gig data count as airtime minutes? I don't do much on compter except manage finance/investments, text to limited circle, email, and watch buster and konakathy's music video posts here. And sometimes get distracted by porn popups, but not for long, 'cause they always want a credit card and I don't use those.

2nd phone on plan is also available for uprade in April next year, so if droid works then would migrate that one too. Maybe they make some tech or price breakthroughs on tablets by then, if not then two smart phones on a plan that covers call/text/net usage and ditch all landline/cable tv/internet connections, less gadgets and monthly invoices to worry about.

That's the plan anyway.

And besides, I always wanted to be able to say these are the droids I'm looking for, that dam Ben and Luke trick me evertime, gonna get me some.

And then I could manage private investment accounts during business hours on a personal device with out running afoul of the 'no work equipment for personal gain' scenario, on official breaks/personal time of course.
 
I just got the HTC Thunderbolt thru Verizon and love it!! $26.99 a month for their unlimited data plan. Never thought I'd use half the features on this thing, but I'm hooked. My wife wants one so bad now but she's gonna have to wait a few months til she's eligible for an upgrade.

$27 for unlimited data? Like internet access?

Best I saw was $44 for 4gig, unlimited was like $129 for business account? Maybe something to do with zipcode?

I currently have a patchwork of plan features I guess. Enough minutes to never run over but save vs. unlimited calling plan use it mostly as an answering macheen. Unlimited text feature to maintain contact no matter what, anytime. My kid sometimes will text me from the back seat "shut up dad" (thanks wingman). Now +$44 for medium amount bandwidth. Minus 15% .gov discount.

Is there an all inclusive verizon plan? I am on the fringe of one of those voids in the commercials, bigger than 3G makes no sense here without infrastructure, 90% of use involves 3rd party tower, have to travel 30+ miles to get to home network to activate phones etc.

Suggestions?

those two samsung is so old i dint even know they exist! lol i have a thing for motorola phones, they to me are pretty crappy phones. Just a couple months ago, some guy own a Motorola phone and it explode on him, it was on the news.

as far as android goes, i like it alot since i love tweaking the system and install new roms, with the motorola you cant do that because they locked the bootloader.

the 4g is only for data like streaming music, and surfing website. It doesnt do anything with your minutes..

i would love to trade my HTC phone for a samsung phone right now.
 
I have a Samsung Intercept and like it just fine. It's a slider. I'm a fairly low data usage type. I prefer to do most of my data work on a computer. I do stream some music and occasionally check out a YouTube vid. Mostly I text, check the weather, check the sports scores, and occasionally check the markets.

As to service, I pay $25 per month for 300 minutes, unlimited texting, and unlimited data. My wife pays $40 for 1200 mins plus unlimited txt & data. This is a no contract phone so I had to pay for the phone up front - $180. The service is Virgin Mobile which runs on the Sprint network. The Sprint network has less coverage than the other plans, but it has great coverage in my state so I'm happy with the coverage. This phone is great for me, I like the price, but people who have to have the latest and greatest phone probably would not be happy.
 
I love my EVO 4G Android, it rocks it's by far the best phone I've ever had, I use it for everything, auto navigation, running, counting calories, camera, internet surfing, white noise generator, heart rate monitor, balistics calculator, pandora music through bluetooth stereo headphones, Netflix, ect.

Next month my contract expires and I'm giving my phone to my wife. The reality is I don't need any of this crap, it's just nice to have but I don't actually need it. I'm going to see what it's like to not have a phone, will I survive?

Make that $29.99 for 2GB data per month. Verizon terminated their unlimited data plan for new smartphone subscribers. Google "at&t data calculator" to find out what 2GB gets you these days.

Suweet! Ordered new phone after COB Friday and it arrives this afternoon, via CA, TN, two cities (towns for you civilized folks) in my state, and then all the way at least 30 miles past the middle of BFE. For free shipping! And pay later just add to the bill.

$150 = phone, 12v charger, leather case, and bluetooth headset (I always wanted to walk around like a dork talking to myself while pressing my ear and demanding Kenneth tell me what's the frequency).

Oh yeah, this is the droid I was looking for. Thinner than the last, but a bit more W x L, solid feel to the slider (fat fingers don't work so well on virtual keyboards these days), just plain slick. I think I'll just look at it for a couple of days before I turn it on. It's almost pornographic this new technology stuff, at least decadent for sure.

Now got to wipe old, prep for new number reprogram, drive 30 miles and activate new, maybe tomorrow or the next day.

I thought about apple, really hard, for a long time. But the pre-approved proprietary crap just doesn't do it for me. Although apparently Motorola does the same stuff to their equipment according to a previous poster.

2nd phone on plan is due in April, if Android platform works for me then maybe I will try a different manufacturer and pick the best. Maybe I'll try apple just to see. Give the least favorite to 2nd user. Sheit he's only 8 and is happy with whatever he gets as long as he don't have to spend his chore money for it.

I am not sure what site you are hitting however, Verizon capped thier data plan on July 7 for new subscribers.

Have to go plug new phhone and notebook into 12v and learn to teather quick, dam thes virtual keys are small and sensitive.
