Folks,

If I submit an IFT at 11:30AM EST, will that IFT play into that days markets? Read: Am I able to see how the morning markets are playing out, then make a decision by Noon to affect that day as a whole?

The reason I ask is because normally I get an email from tsp.gov at night saying the transaction has been confirmed, which leads me to believe that the monies weren't in the correct funds for that day's +/- swing.

Thanks!

Karson

Karson, IFTs put in before 12:00 noon ET normally go into effect at COB for that day. You don't participate in that day's gains or losses. After 12:00 noon they go into effect close of business for the next day the TSP is open for business. Some exceptions for holidays, etc.

Just to be perfectly clear, because I think Scout333 miss-typed.
If an IFT is submited "before NOON" on a TSP business day, then that IFT goes into effect AFTER the COB that day. You do reap all the gains and losses of that market day.

Personal IFT days can make for some interesting afternoons.

In other words you can't jump out at 11:30 because the markets are tanking and use the previous close prices. Alternately, you can't jump in without putting your money on the table ahead of time, so to speak.

Pretty sure I have this right, so if somebody with some TSP prowess wants to back this up, I won't mind one bit.

That's correct although officially Scout333 did state it correctly. It's confusing, but at COB that same day, when the share prices are posted, your new funds are bought, and old shares are sold.

So if you do an IFT on 2/16 at 11:30 AM ET to 100% G, it is effective COB 2/16. That means you bought the G fund shares at 2/16 COB prices.

If you do an IFT on 2/16 at 12:30 PM ET to 100% G, it is effective COB 2/17. (2/17 prices).

I think we're all saying the same thing but to new folks it can be confusing.

Uh, I am a bit lost. Hold on.

If I have no more IFT's for February and I want to change my % in the funds, will I wait until 12:01 PM on February 28th for a COB on March 1st or do I have to wait until 11:59 AM on March 1st for a COB on March 1st OR do I have to wait until 12:01 PM on March 1st for a COB on March 2nd?

"wait until 12:01 PM on February 28th for a COB on March 1st"

Anything after 12:00 on Feb 28 will be an IFT for March. You'll be in the new funds at COB 3/1 - start of business on 3/2.
