I have BAD Nuts..

This year everyone of my Nuts was bad....Oh, I should explain..

My Pecan tree was full of nuts this year except everyone of them was bad..Ate from the inside out by the Larva of a Pecan Weevil..I used root systemic insect killer, but they still manged to thrive on my nuts...:blink:

anybody ever have this problem, or know how to ward off next year's attack?....

Check with the ag extension/county agent. They can possibly offer advice, and occasionally do something, depending on the situation, I don't know if you're residential or agriculture. Can't have a problem like that spreading to others. I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself, as you could possibly kill some of the beneficial worms, not just the pecan weevils/worms.

I never had a problem with the pecan worms/weevils, worse luck for me. When I was a kid I had to pick A LOT of pecans as our family farm had about 6 giant pecan trees that had an enormous bumper crop for a couple of years. It was an incredible yield and the barn was filled with about 50 bushels of pecans. By the way, if you have a real serious crop, there's a handy tool you can buy that has a wire mesh on the bottom that can pick pecans up from the grass fairly easily.

I've tried Malathion as a topical spray during the growing season and Dormant oil for the winter..mostly pretty benign chemicals for the rest of the yard and plants...The weevils are a lot like the cotton bole weevil, but prefer young Pecan nuts to lay their eggs in..once they are able to do that, nothing (chemical wise) seems to get the Larva inside the nut as it grows.....

Anyways, I'll check around as you suggested and maybe there is something I haven't tried yet.

We grow a lot of paper-shell pecans around here, Buster, and sevin is the spray of choice. But it is a contact pesticide and people have to be very careful to spray on a windless day to avoid adverse effects on ladybugs or on Show-me's honey bees.

I'm totally for the Bees, without them there wouldn't bee any of us much longer..Pecans as you know, are self pollinating by local dusting, bees not needed...No flowers or anything around my Pecan to worry about either...

Just know Sevin is a death sentence for Honeybee's and they can and will take it back to the hive. I don't think there is any good answer.

Okay, I'm open to learning new things. Pecan weevils are very interesting. Sevin is the recommended insecticide, but application is late summer after the nut has formed.

The key is knowing the life cycle of the bug. The adults emerge from the ground and it is conditional on soil type and moisture. Then the adults feed and breed. Approx. five days after emerging from soil female weevils start laying eggs.

Multiple treatment will be needed over multiple years to keep the little bastards at bay. Should not effect honeybee's unless a colony is close.

You want pecans? Your going to have to work for it now that you have weevils.

Don't worry SM..I will take every precaution and be alert for Honey bee activity in the area..I love them Bees and their Honey too..


My plan of attack is first use Grub-x and Diazinon on the soil under the tree this spring..then spray the tree once the leaves pop with Sevin and continue spraying every weekend until the nuts are fully formed, this will be around the end of July when they are matured...

Here is an example of a Pecan that had the Weevil grub inside and it bored a hole to get out to drop to the ground for next year's adult life cycle

That's sad, all those good pecans ruined by those darn bugs. I bought a BIG Pecan Pie today for Thanksgiving, heat it up in the oven and top it with French vanilla Ice cream, NOW you're talkin'. Buster I hope your nuts are perfect next year.
