Hello TSP Talk

Hello everyone, I've been lurking around here for about a month and decided to join up yesterday. I'm 24 and a Civ for the AF. I always thought conributing a solid % to my TSP would suffice, but it looks like there's money to be made.

So far I've gotten a lot of information just by reading different threads and reading the daily market commentary. I'm still terribly nervous everytime I make an IFT, thinking the market will crash immediately after...but hopefully educating myself will help my confidence. Thanks again!

Everyone is nervious when making IFTs at least I am, when it's good it's really good if not, it's really bad! Stick around and join in on the conversations.

Emotions rule the market, that is true, but we've got the info you need to make sound decisions. That should at least help calm your nerves when making changes to your account.

Welcome, be patient, and remember that at 24, mistakes can be corrected over the long haul.

Welcome, XOmek, I never stop being nervous, still learning underconfidence can be as bad as overconfidence-but pain teaches lessons-trick is to learn when and how to apply the lessons next time the opportunity comes up. and it will.

I wouldn't worry. In 35 years when you cash out your TSP you will be glad you had a chance to buy low!

Remember, you have a VERY long time to accumulate. Any bumps in the road for the next 20 years won't really affect you... IMO

There are great tools here, and lot's of insight. I have made lot's of gains here, and have survived lot's of market turmoil. As you stick with it, you will gain confidence and enjoy the larger perspective and the longer view.

You're young, so invest aggressive!

PS... On the down days, I avoid looking at my balance, and on the good days I review it several times. I just try to ignore when I have lost gains, and try to make the best plans for the next move. You may wish to get familiar with the Sentiment Survey. Strong track record, and at least you are not all on your own... at the very least it is interesting.

My dad inherited some Exxon stock when I was a kid and I always remember looking in the paper to check the XOM price...I guess that was my first introduction to the market!

I recommended XOM to a young lady in around 1983 when it was selling at $30 and yielding a 10% dividend. Can you imagine the gains after several splits and dividend reinvestments.
