Hello to all from joylynn

Welcome. yep a lot of newbies here me too. alot of smart people here. Your right you don't want to spend your life in the G fund but I'm sure you don't want to lose 20-30% either. I like trying to find the lows buy then try to guess when to get out. lol but if you look around as I am sure you have you may already know there are some great ideas out there. Saw a simple one wrote to you follow the leaders. Good luck

Hi, Joylynn! Are you snowed in, shoveling out, whatever they are doing in your part of Illinois? Gotta post, girl, tho,:cheesy: maybe in your previous life that got old !! Read Tom's commentaries posted in the mornings, read the blogs the guys write later in the day - then ask questions. Look at the Official site & see what they say about the L plans, don't necessarily use, them, but maybe as a basis for where you are in your work/age life. (We have L info here, too.) And a wide, diverse variety of answers - some even related to the subject at hand :)(watch some of these guys, tho - they pull legs!)

I am new to the tsp talk and have lots of questions especially about what to do with my G fund. Help!! I know I need to make the move but when, to where????

On the auto-tracker Following the Leader isnt a bad idea if your a newbie
and willing to take some risk.
IOW... TSP members with the highest % must be doing something right, you can try doin' as they do.

Welcome aboard!

Welcome joylynn! If you have questions, ask away. But if you ask where you should put your money, you're likely to get as many different answers as there are members. :D

We're here to help you try to make that decision on your own - or you can follow others on the AutoTracker if you prefer.

Welcome joylynn:

Here is the best advice I can give someone just starting out-- don't move too quick--not until you are comfortable knowing the risks and rewards-

Please read this thread first- it contains some good information:

http://www.tsptalk.com/mb/showthread.php?t=3629

I recommend that thread to anyone just starting out.

None of us here are professional money managers- so it would be wrong to try and give someone else advice to move YOUR money to the C, the S, the I or the F fund.- In fact, you'd need to be a licensed financial planner to do that- so we won't. YOU will have to be the one that best determines where YOU should place YOUR money.

Thanks- welcome, and good luck.

Good to have you here. Although most folks are hesitent to give out advice, it would help to know what time frame you're looking at. When do you retire, when do you collect, ect.

Welcome Joy Lynn !!

I turned that gray square to a green one just because it's wonderful knowing you have lots of questions and are open to information.

Well the 'expression' for this site is 'Friends don't let friends Buy and Hold'. Last year would clearly have shown how disasterous that would be if you were fully invested :worried:. This year however anyone fully invested that stayed invested did better than the ones trying to grab some gains and duck to safety. :D

The 'Active Players' like it sounds you want to be ;) usually will go in C,S,I and grab a few thousand and then lock in the Gains to G Fund and wait for another opportunity.

If you've been in G Fund for most of 2009 then you have a lot of making up to do. Many here shout 'Doom and Gloom' and there have been numerous horrible statements -- even recently about the VIX.

The Markets have 'Consistently GROWN' since 3/09 and there is no way in hell the Global Governments are going to let it sink to new lows. EVERYTHING points to sustained Growth and over time getting out of G Fund and into C,S,I Funds are your best bet.

S Fund will likely give you the Greatest Gain -- Then I Fund and then C Fund. But it's good to spread your investments so you might go 40/40/20 - C/S/I and let it ride for awhile.

I was 17 some % ahead -- went down to 8 something % it seemed like overnight but held on -- knowing the long range outlook continued to be excellent. The Bulk of the ones posting are the very same that strive to avoid a 5 to 10% occasional 'correction' and catch the next boost up.

GL - and thanks for joining. There are a lot of men here and we need some women to help bring a good balance. :)

Steady

Hi joylynn, welcome! This is a place to learn. Many knowledgeable people, lots of information to absorb. What to do depends entirely on your circumstances, level of risk you are willing to take, how many years til you think you'll retire, how closely you want to watch your account, how much time you're willing to put into learning-reading, reading, reading. Nobody'll tell you what to do exactly, that is up to you, but they'll tell you what they're doing for themselves and why, and they'll tell why something might be a bad idea if you toss the idea out there for feedback. So. Are you new to TSP? how long have you been in?
